I am interested in developing my career in this field; however, I don't see the available options as being in line with my goals and abilities. I have been working in the mental health field in a variety of peer support roles for over 15 years, and while several paths have opened themselves, including administrative and case management roles, none of these align with my expertise or passion. Therapy comes closest, but seems to be lacking as well. While I know that therapy does afford some avenues for self disclosure, I would not be able to use my lived experience to the extent that I have nearly as effectively as a therapist. I would also have to spend a great deal of time in classes that cover topics I am already well versed in. Just not convinced the juice is worth the squeeze.

Emotional Researcher at Happiness Is No Charge

I studied 2 years on a psychosomatic illness course in 1974. The goal was "Talking Therapy therapist". No degree required at the time. Tons of study on the mind, the concepts, the technique, which had a long protocol, and much on Emotions. Passed the course, could have practiced. I am an independent emotional researcher... No degree, but I had a decent background. The technique I independently discovered has helped a lot of people with emotional issues.

My career goal is to become a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and I have a BA in Psychology. I was wondering if anyone has any advice for entry-level jobs that aren't being an RBT that I could try to do while I get my Master's or just to get experience before getting into the field. I should be starting my Master's either in August or January (depending on personal circumstances). Any advice would be appreciated!

This is a clear, helpful, and much-appreciated summary of how to become a therapist. May I add that there are numerous other volunteer and paid careers that enable practitioners — including those who have lived experience with mental illness or addictions — to walk alongside those who struggle and help them in their recovery journeys. These include peer specialists, wellness coaches, Wellness and Recovery Action Plan facilitators, trained support group facilitators, mindfulness meditation coaches and trainers, mental health non-profit leaders, and more. None of the above is a substitute for therapy when it is required, but they can augment therapy in powerful ways. With about 60 million adults who live with mental illness in the country (does not include young people or the loved ones who require support), this is an all-hands-on-deck opportunity to address one one the most pervasive crises in our society. Thank God for the therapists and others who are making a difference.

In the UK, there are other routes that do not require the financial burden a degree now costs. That's not to say it's cheap to qualify by going down the diploma route, it's certainly not, but the diploma route allows more people to follow the path should they choose it.

Find entry level positions that have robust tuition support programs and will provide opportunities for internships. This was a key talent pipeline for me areas in the past

This was a great concise article to help those misled by the dominant and incorrect narrative that to become a therapist a PhD in Psychology is needed. There are many routes one can take, and I hope this article reaches those who need it. It can save them plenty of time and money.

One thing there's a university of behaviour health in Lisbon. They offer post graduate qualifications in the field. I'm looking into the right to develop, liberty, during my studying health science.
