We had the privilege of hosting several veterans with 51 Vets and Pavilion yesterday as they had the opportunity to hear from several speakers on sales, transitioning from military to the workforce, and more. 51 Vets is a nonprofit that helps individuals from Special Units or Aviation transition into leadership, finance, consulting or venture roles. We're so thankful to each of these men for the sacrifices they've made, and are grateful for organizations like 51Vets who help make a huge life transition a bit easier.

On a cold February morning in the late 80s, I left my dad's house for the first and last time. My dad dropped me off at the MEPS station in Shreveport, LA to leave for US Navy bootcamp. As I got out of the truck, my dad said, “Wear clean clothes; show up on time; keep your mouth shut; and always put yourself into a position that they can't do without you." Sharing this from a childhood friend who served 20 years in the military. He is the child of Cuban immigrants who was a boy scout with my brothers. A real authentic, stand-up guy. The lessons he took from his years of service are lessons everyone should learn be it in the military, at home, in sports, in school or at work. We are all part of something much bigger than ourselves. Working together for the greater good, towards a common goal is vital. Let's not forget that. Let's remember to thank our service members. They sacrifice a lot for us all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ On this Veterans Day let’s thank those who are now and have served in combat. We owe them our Freedom. Let us also thank those who are and have served but, by the grace of God, have never seen combat. When you join the military, you pledge your allegiance to everyone living in America, even those who have a different view of what freedom means. You become part of something bigger than yourself. While some may not experience military life, I can tell you that the premise of working together for the greater good is what makes us the best. Working with whomever is in your unit at the time teaches most of us that working together is much better than fighting amongst ourselves. Everyone in the military learns about Leadership. While not all become leaders within the rank structure, everyone learns to lead. The excellent leaders know that they are replaceable, and their charge is to make sure that there is someone to step up to fill their position on a moments notice and start that chain of promotions to advance the careers of those who serve under them and maintain the cohesiveness of the unit. Helping develop leaders who upon reassignment, take the skills you have trained them on and implement them to improve their new unit is very satisfying. So let us thank those among us who are or have served. If asked, even us old guys would again suit up to serve our Country.

I attended an event last week hosted by the incomparable Amy Porterfield. She challenged us to #DSD (do something different). Today, I reflect on a different type of entrepreneurial spirit. It’s the 76th birthday of the United States Air Force. A thought struck me - the USAF didn't exist during WWII but emerged from the National Security Act of 1947, a true testament to the power of #DSD. The audacity to change, to adapt, to evolve - that's what separates the ordinary from the extraordinary. I marveled at the courage it took to make such a monumental shift. What conversations and debates must have filled the rooms of the US Army and the US Army Air Forces before this decision? This introspection was a wake-up call, a reminder that we too often get caught in the monotony of repetitions. How many times have I, or you, done the same thing the 2nd, 20th, or 100th time, expecting different results? The answer hit me like a bolt of lightning - it's time to #DSD. So, to all the business leaders and storytellers out there, I pose this question: What's your Do Something Different opportunity? Let's dare to disrupt and create. The world didn't change by staying the same. As we celebrate the USAF's birthday, let's also celebrate the power of transformation.
