“Calle produces believable autobiographical work for public consumption, thus in entering the public domain, Calle’s stories form her identity: we see her as she wishes to be seen. Moreover, Calle plays on the nature of the real versus that of fiction; interlaced in her work is a tension between what we see and what truth we are being led to believe.” In June 2023, I completed my second degree in Fine Art Photography. It was always a dream of mine to go to Glasgow School of Art and in 2019 I made that happen. It was a journey of real discovery. I learned to be comfortable with my creative approach to photography; to stop worrying about what the expected commercial standard was and to start looking towards artist photographers for inspiration. In my final year, while writing my dissertation, I developed a healthy obsession with Sophie Calle. Her courage, bravery, and the confidence she conveys in her work about herself led me down the rabbit hole of autobiography, bringing me back into the world of Roland Barthes. This experience emphasized that photography centered around ourselves is a delicate interplay of reality and fiction. We all have many facets but not all of them are relevant and what is appropriate for one context vastly differs from another.  A skilled brand photographer can discern which aspects of you and your business are pertinent, working with you to highlight what is most important for the specific image you want to project. The lines between real versus fiction are always blurred - no-one’s reality is the same as another and so it’s perfectly acceptable to create the real which reflects your brand.
