This past weekend at MAGNiTT 2023 Offsite, we had the privilege of being enlightened by various thought leaders. One speaker, Peter Walker, the Head of Insights at Carta, made an indelible mark with his profound expertise in data visualization. During his session, Peter emphasized the importance of consistency in our LinkedIn postings, all while reminding us to infuse a human touch into our work. A consistent presence, both in content and timing, holds the potential to significantly engage our audience and bolster our brand. Another point he shared was the need to distill charts to a singular, clear takeaway. In a data-abundant world, simplicity emerges as the linchpin for effectively conveying our message. Peter highlighted the value of striking a balance and not over-relying on AIs like GPT. While these tools have their place, he encouraged us to interject our unique perspectives and provide that human element in our job roles, as we do at MAGNiTT. However, what resonated the most was Peter's encouragement for each team member to actively contribute as part of the brand narrative. In a collaborative setting, this perspective echoes the essence of a harmonious symphony, where every individual's voice combines to create a compelling brand melody. “Listening to both sides of a story will convince you that there is more to a story than both sides” – Frank Tyger. Whilst managers might have an opinion, and surveys might suggest a hypothesis, there is always more to a story if one were to listen to the voice of employees in the their own words. Contextual Live Pulse model provides an avenue for additional data points that are critical for accurate reality reflection. This data is difficult to discover (or hard to measure the depth of feelings) at scale through surveys or one-on-one conversations, no matter how much faith the “evaluator” has in his or her sentiment-reading skills. The reasons are simple - data is often withheld or gets mutated. As an example - employees (even if they respect you as a leader) will often tell you only as much as they think you can / should handle at a point in time. In the case of surveys, there are even more reasons to withhold or misrepresent the data. If you are familiar with a software industry inner workings, the reason why performance tests exists is not all about finding "issues". Ongoing performance benchmarking, that is integrated into a normal pipeline, is a prerequisite for achieving higher performance and continuously becoming better. Similarly, Live Pulse model for engagement with employees (if it is measurable and contextual) can be viewed as the ongoing non-financial benchmarking of business performance and interaction related matters - challenges, wins, business process specific matters, culture matters. If your approach to improving the organization is heavily biased towards discreet surveys, then you might experience the effect of stagnating, waterfall change. Live Pulse model should be in everyone's operating model as a companion for accurate reality reflection and continuous re-invention. #organizationalbehavior #data #leadership
