NEW WeLink, a fixed wireless startup, was founded in 2018. Since then, the fixed wireless industry in the US has undergone a dramatic amount of change, with some companies (Starry) falling into bankruptcy, some (Rise Broadband) pivoting to fiber, and others (T-Mobile and Verizon) enjoying spectacular growth. And how has all that affected WeLink? "We have not changed," Luke Langford, the company's CEO, told Light Reading. The latest: WeLink will enter the Los Angeles market via new funding from Los Angeles County. Under that newly announced deal, the fixed wireless access (FWA) provider will ultimately cover 275,000 homes and businesses across 68 square miles in the underserved regions of East Los Angeles/Boyle Heights and South Los Angeles. "We're in expansion mode," Langford said. Langford said that WeLink was founded by longtime veterans in the fixed wireless space with the goal of using wireless technologies to offer fiber-like Internet services. It’s a shame the technotopians keep seeking out new territories. Our existing cities have plenty of problems to solve. And there are plenty of technologies that could help solve them. Their perpetual focus on starting from scratch is just a megalomaniac distraction. No need to worry, you may think: Many of these places will never get built. But there’s an opportunity cost to these utopian dreams. What if all the billions in venture capital money and media attention were refocused on solving real-world challenges in cities today? Could we better fix public transportation’s pending fiscal cliff or the affordable housing crisis? I’m afraid we’ll never know. The lure of starting from scratch is just too great.

Will Atlanta become at Top 🖐 Tech Hub? -- Many people are calling BS! Here are the facts: As of 2024, #Atlanta is emerging as a significant tech hub in both national and global contexts. According to Business Facilities magazine, Atlanta has been ranked as the top tech hub in the U.S. and holds the eighth position globally for startup ecosystems. This places Atlanta just behind London and ahead of Berlin, highlighting its growing prominence on the world stage. (Global Atlanta) (Hypepotamus) Several factors contribute to Atlanta's rise as a #tech hub. The city has a strong foundation in various tech sectors, including cybersecurity, fintech, digital media, and software development. For instance, Atlanta processes approximately 70% of all debit, credit, and prepaid card transactions in the U.S., earning it the nickname "Transaction Alley." The city's vibrant fintech scene is supported by numerous startups and established companies. Enhance Educational Partnerships: Strengthen collaborations between local #universities (such as Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, and #HBCUs) and tech companies to align curricula with industry needs and increase internship and job placement opportunities ( I've talked to some professors / ecosystem partners and they have no idea that this is even a thing 😐 ) 2. Focus on Equitable Growth: Involve local communities in tech initiatives to ensure that the benefits of tech growth are widely distributed. 3. Support Networking Opportunities: Organize tech conferences, meetups, and networking events to connect local tech talent, investors, and industry leaders. Be the heartbeat of the ecosystem and bring everyone together. 4. Streamline Regulations: Simplify business regulations and reduce bureaucratic hurdles to make it easier for tech companies to start and grow. 5. Strengthen Cybersecurity and Fintech Sectors: Leverage Atlanta's existing strengths in fintech by supporting innovation and development in financial technologies. Expand cybersecurity training programs to prepare the workforce for the growing demand in this field. This is not an exhaustive list, but it's definitely a start.
