Live from New York... it's our second quarterly networking event for women in #SWE!🗽 Yesterday's programming kicked off with an AMA with COO Jen L. Wong, ML Engineering Manager Abigail Shchur, and Staff Software Engineer Lonni Ingram. Next, we mingled with more than 30 external women in software engineering and 15 Snoos from #SLT and our Employee Resource Group, Women Eng. The goal of this event is to build long-term connections with communities we'd like to see represented more strongly here at Reddit and create opportunities for these folks to learn about our company culture and available job openings. Recent stats from AnitaB.org's Top Companies for Women Technologists show that women comprised 27.6% of the tech workforce in 2022. While there's been a slight uptick, we're not quite back to pre-pandemic representation yet. And with the tech layoffs of 2023, concerns are rising that women may be disproportionately affected. That's why we want to remind you of a key feature: 🔍 Our Gender Diversity Filter is here to assist companies in finding and recruiting female software engineers, part of our ongoing effort to foster a more diverse and inclusive tech community. #GenderDiversity #WomenInTech #InclusiveHiring #TechIndustry

When the world doubts she can, she’ll do it anyway. And I’ve seen that play-out for so many women grafting their way into this industry. But self-doubt is the enemy of belief, and it’s rife in women starting out. Who the hell says a woman with the dedication to build a decade-long career in nursing, or teaching, doesn’t have what it takes to become a software engineer? That’s just plain silly. But I’ve seen this play-out in equal measure. Setting the conditions for women to believe they have an equal right to opportunity in tech shouldn’t be a stretch. The industry desperately needs these women, so why do we make it so hard? Let’s all believe they can, so they can focus on the doing. #womenintech

Women are 65 percent more likely than men to be impacted by layoffs in the tech industry, which may result in women feeling more pressure to perform at a high level. The frequent loss of women coworkers also takes away chances for women in tech to form closer relationships with each other and expand their professional networks. But together, we can change that. ConnectHER provides a safe and supportive space for women in tech to connect, share experiences and build professional networks. Working on this post has been inspiring, and I’ve learned so much from my incredible colleagues. Now, here’s my two cents. Lesson learned: Everyone experiences imposter syndrome at some point. This feeling never fully disappears, and it's often the most talented and hardworking individuals who struggle with it the most. What I’d tell my younger self: If something comes easily to you, remember it might not be the case for others. Focus on and enhance these effortless skills - they're your true strengths. Now, your turn.
We've got some big sister advice for you. 🙋♀️ This International Women's Day, we're skipping the empty platitudes and clichés. Instead, we're offering what many wish they had but didn't: Hard-earned lessons for women in tech from the badass women of Proxify. Share this with a woman in your life. Trust us, she needs to hear it. Proxify’s network is waiting for you: https://lnkd.in/ekNSW4mf #womenintech #coding #softwaredevelopment #developers #programming #remotejobs #remotework

Diversity in IT: A Reflection of Our World The tech industry thrives on innovation, and diversity is its backbone. Women, with their unique viewpoints, problem-solving skills, and ability to communicate, are key to this innovation. Their contribution makes tech solutions better and more inclusive. A recent discussion on Reddit highlighted a pressing issue: a team leader's discomfort with a female colleague joining the team. This situation reminds us that despite progress, challenges remain. Studies, like those from the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Science Advances, show that companies with diverse leadership are more successful and mixed-gender teams produce stronger scientific research. But diversity isn't just about hiring. It's about making everyone feel welcome and valued. This means reaching out, holding events to introduce women and minorities to our companies, and making joining us easy and appealing. I dream of an IT world as diverse as our society. A place where everyone is represented, feels safe, and has equal opportunities. To achieve this, leaders in tech must actively promote diversity, not only by building diverse teams but also by fostering an environment where every voice is heard and valued. The Reddit conversation serves as a call to action. Let's not just talk about diversity; let's live it. By making IT welcoming for all, we're not just improving our work culture—we're setting a standard for the future. #SoftwareEngineering #IT #WomenInTech #Diversity

Women Techsters Fellow (Class of 2024) | Cybersecurity Enthusiast | Virtual Administrative Assistant
Day 3 of the Women Techsters Fellowship Orientation hosted by Tech4Dev proved to be a highly enriching experience that I found immensely valuable. The day commenced with an opening address by Adaora Ikenze, Director of Public Policy (Anglophone West Africa) at Meta who emphasized the importance of using words of affirmation. One phrase that resonated deeply within me was, 'I deserve all the positive opportunities coming my way.' Subsequently, we had a panel discussion which featured esteemed alumni of the Women Techster Fellowship program, namely Belinda Opola, Idiat Alli, Juwonlo Michael, and Omolara Oladipupo. Their discourse centered on the delicate balance between motherhood and our careers in the technology industry, and it proved to be truly eye-opening. Following the panel session, Joke Akintara, Product Lead at FanBants (Techstars 23) gave an insightful account on confronting imposter syndrome. This particular segment resonated very well with me on a personal level, as I found myself relating to the experiences shared. I gained invaluable insights on overcoming imposter syndrome, with two key takeaways being, 'If you are in the room, acknowledge that you belong there', and 'Done is better than perfect'. The subsequent session was dedicated to addressing critical issues of sexual harassment and gender-based violence, which was presented by Elizabeth Talatu Williams, Executive Director of Sustainable Impacts and Development Initiative, and Dorothy (Dory) NJEMANZE, Executive Director of the Dorothy Njemanze Foundation (DNF). They imparted essential knowledge on how to stand up for oneself when being sexually harassed, underscoring the principle that when a person says 'No,' it unequivocally means 'No.' These sessions have left a profound impact on me, and I deeply appreciate the comprehensive and concise discussions which the Women Techsters Fellowship Orientation offered. #WTFC24 #WomenTechstersFellowship #WomenTechsters #AfricanWomanInTechnology #WTFC24Orientation #Tech4Dev
