[IAC 2023: Connecting All Space People at the Most Diverse IAC in History] The 74th International Astronautical Congress, organised by the IAF and hosted in the vibrant city of Baku by Azercosmos, the Space Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was a resounding success. After 50 years, the IAC returned to Baku, where it first hosted the 24th International Astronautical Congress in 1973. During the opening ceremony, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, warmly welcomed the IAC delegates. IAF President Clay Mowry also spoke at the opening ceremony and reminded the delegates about the historic importance of the Federation in bringing together the whole space community, especially in challenging geopolitical times. The historian, philosopher and best-selling author Yuval Noah Harari also appeared at the opening ceremony to share a cautious message about Artificial Intelligence, “when dealing with a technology that can annihilate us, we cannot afford to make a mistake”. Under the theme “Global Challenges and Opportunities: Give Space a Chance”, the focus during this IAC has been on sustainability, security, and international collaboration. During a personal project I had the opportunity to study the ISS and in doing so I became passionate about the space sector. It is thanks to the #ISS and ESA's #Rosetta Mission that I have embarked on this scientific career.

The International Space Station is humanity's home in space. The space station has been occupied since 2000, and today, more than 40% of the habitable volume of the Station is manufactured in Italy. Italy fabricated the Node-2 Harmony, the Node-3 Tranquility, and the Cupola and contributed to the Columbus European laboratory. With the launch of the Leonardo logistic module in March 2001, Italy became the third nation after Russia and the United States to orbit an ISS element. Sustainability, the motto of the IAC 2024, is one of the guiding principles of all activities on board the ISS. Gaganyaan, a human space flight mission and one of India's most ambitious space programmes, is all set to become reality with Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair,Group Captain Ajith Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubhansu Shukla of the Indian Air Force having received their' astronaut wings' on February 27 at Vikram Sarabhai Centre in Thumba, Kerala, from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who rightly described them as the'four forces representing the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians. While the excitement around Gagnayan among Indians demonstrates the growing profile of ISRO( Indian Space Research Organisation), the task of sending humans into the vast unknown and bringing them back safely is more expensive and challenging than Mars and Moon missions. A successful execution of Gaganyaan would not only put India in the company of the US, Russia, and China but also make Indian science and technology more competitive at the highest level. For this dream to materialise, India needs to enhance its spending on research and development while nurturing universities as centres of research and development, for it holds the key to positioning the country as a leader in space research.

What is the first thing which comes to your mind when you think about Italy and Turin? Personally, I think about the 2006 Winter Olympics. However, Italy is the second EU country after Germany in the aerospace sector, and Turin is its heart. By the way, I was surprised to learn that Italy was the third country in the world to launch a satellite after the USSR and the US.  Space as a safe environment, open to exploration, peaceful use and international cooperation by current and future generations, this is the concept at the heart of IAC2024, dedicated to the theme “Responsible Space for Sustainability”, organised by the International Astronautical Federation and hosted in Italy by the AIDAA - The Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics , with the support of #Leonardo and the Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana).   💡 ASI, in collaboration with AIDAA and Leonardo, has launched a Call for Ideas to invite third and fourth years of Italian secondary schools, in Italy and abroad, to reflect on the theme of sustainability and to delve into its contents. The challenge is to develop a project proposal that answers one of the following questions:   ◾ How to use space technologies to make our Planet more sustainable?   ◾ How can Space and space exploration be made more sustainable?   ◾ How can Italy be the engine of space sustainability?   🎯 The aim of the proposals is to use space science and technology to make the Planet and Space more sustainable, as well as to use satellite or mission data and services to improve the status of one or more of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
