In life and in launches, things don’t always go as planned. On August 16, 2023 WorldView Enterprises launched a 300 ft. high-altitude balloon holding SET’s automated radiation measurement instrument, ARMAS. The flight time of the balloon and instruments was intended to be 30 days, but the flight had to be terminated after 11 hours because unexpected winds at float altitude of 70,000 ft. presented a flight safety issue. Additionally, high ambient temperatures in the desert caused one of the instruments to overheat and transmit unusable data. After an intrepid trek through the Nevada desert, the payload and balloon were recovered fully intact by the WorldView Enterprises recovery team. Despite the disappointing result, we still gained valuable information about flying ARMAS in high-altitude and extreme temperature  conditions. A reflight is currently planned for summer 2024.

MANPADS have seen use in many conflicts since their inception several decades ago, and the threat is still very real today. Lower airspace is becoming increasingly contested, and ongoing conflicts and regional instability have only increased this threat further. Direct Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) systems such as Leonardo's MIYSIS address this threat, using multi-band high-power laser energy to overwhelm a MANPADS seeker, ensuring protection of people, platform and mission. Quick overview video of the first trials of the Smart Sound Connect Subsurface navigation array. We used University of Plymouth's RV Falcon Spirit to deploy two novel "iUSBL" seabed nodes, supplied by our partners Sonardyne International Ltd, at the L4 site (55m depth, 4nm south of Plymouth, UK). After calibration, these were then used to track in real-time a SEABER YUCO-CARRIER micro-AUV equipped with a Nano beacon, prior to then safely recovering all components. Even this provisional tracking data (despite the odd glitch still within it!) is providing unique, independent insight leading to improvements in AUV navigation accuracy. More trials to come! The capabilities of the array will be further refined in the coming weeks to allow real-time navigation and two-way data telemetry back to shore using Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML)'s L4 buoy as a surface gateway.
