Director of Ecoacoustics at Baker Consultants and Senior Lecturer in Ecology at Nottingham Trent University
One of my lingering thoughts from @ecoacoustics24 (which was a great conference btw) relates to the role of traditional field survey data in validating new ecoacoustic methods. It can be summed up in this quote from Woodhouse (2021): The use of the term “ground truth” can distort our understanding of what remote sensing has achieved in the past and risks constraining our imagination of what it might achieve in the future. It primes us to believe that the right answer, the most truthful one, is the one that is measured on the ground not the one measured from a distance. When we use the term it does not allow for the possibility that the most valid measurement, is actually the one made from above”
