If you are new to the profession - and starting a summer internship - you are more tuned into the business press. Two weeks ago, the world saw rate cuts in the US as a 2025 affair. Fast forward to today - and with a bit more data – the world sees at least some cuts in 2024. Feel like conventional wisdom is a puppy chasing a forecasting ball around the yard? Therein lies the advantage of attending our June Macro Summit for Summer Interns. Establish an intellectual framework early in your career. I’m proud to announce that this summer... … I don’t have an internship! Shock horror. I treat LinkedIn like a 9-5, documenting university life and my career journey. I’ve taken part in incredible work experiences such as Citi’s programme in my first year of university. I have nearly 2,500 followers on here all interested about my career journey… I’ve worked really hard throughout my time at University to learn all about careers and fields that I never even knew existed. I am ever so grateful for my roles at LSE that remain throughout summer (I can’t get enough of social mobility initiatives), but I haven’t accepted an offer by any firm to work for them for 10/12 weeks this summer. And that’s okay, even if it is atypical for LSE students not to intern in their second year. I’m making this post for those who have also just finished second-year of university without a specific summer internship to turn to. If you’re still looking for work experience I really recommend finding smaller local firms in your region and asking to shadow their work (I did this post A-Levels!). Evidently my path has always been slightly unconventional, but that’s how I like to operate. So instead of an internship I’m turning to draw on many resources to have a productive summer (and arguably a more productive one than I would have had on a 9-5 city role). You might think that no internship might mean fewer experiences over summer for me to post about, but you’d be quite wrong - I’m looking forward to all the events I’ve booked, qualifications I might achieve, and to spend a month away (It would have been impossible to intern for 10/12 weeks and spend a month abroad with family anyway!). The key to this is *paid* internships. Unpaid internships are the norm in North America. I've done them twice in my career both of which were critical to my success. The first was in high school at 16 when I did an internship at an Advertising agency which I would then work in full time for the next 4 years as I also went to Uni full time. At 16 I was living at home so my family supported me taking unpaid work as I earned class credit. I did another unpaid internship while I was completing my Masters dissertation at King's College London at We Are Social (still such a soft place in my heart for all my old WASers!) so I could really test out my theories about social media at an agency leading in the space. I was able to do this because I was living with my boyfriend (now husband) and had saved up money from working to take a career break. In both instances I had the financial and emotional support to take on unpaid work. Well done to Octopus Investments and other organisations that realise you cannot create real change and access to opportunities if you are not offering paid internships. #internships2023 #paidinternships #internshipopportunity

Wrapping up the Spring Quarter 2023-24, I feel fortunate to have had an outstanding class. We explored AI in global markets, current events and trends, and risk management of Multinational Corporations, applying our knowledge through Harvard business case reviews.
