Less than 2% of global #healthcare R&D is dedicated to female-specific conditions beyond cancer. What is the potential of #AI to help to close that gender disparity? Sharing my recap of a #SXSW2024 panel discussion about the promise and risks that AI and predictive tech carry as a path to closing the healthcare gender gap. Dive in at: https://lnkd.in/eK5iXHYG The conversation about the integration of AI-driven technologies into the healthcare system will continue at the upcoming conference, “The New Wave of AI in Healthcare 2024”, presented May 1-2, 2024 in New York City by The New York Academy of Sciences and the Windreich Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. AI dolls for South Korea’s lonely aging population You must’ve heard about AI girlfriends for tackling loneliness. But AI companions for elderly people? A Korean-based company released an AI companion doll at the Mobile World Congress, to combat the loneliness experienced by South Korea’s elderly population. Priced at $1800, this robot doll named Hyodol is not just another tech gadget. Beyond its slightly eerie exterior lies a sophisticated AI capable of conversation, health reminders, and even alerting caregivers in case of emergencies, keeping an eye on its users. Key Highlights: 1. Hyodol is equipped with a mobile communication module, processor, various sensors, and speakers, supported by an LLM capable of holding full conversations. 2. It offers features like touch interaction, voice reminders, health coaching, quizzes, exercise, music, and more, alongside caregiver functionalities like voice messaging and motion detection. 3. It can even remind people to take medication and safety features are installed that alert them when no movement has been detected for a certain period. It really is always watching. 4. Approximately 7,000 Hyodol dolls have been deployed to seniors living alone and dementia patients in a university hospital in Gangwon province. 5. A study conducted by the company shows that over 9,000 users showed a reduction in depression levels from 5.73 to 3.14 and an improvement in medicine intake. This is a classic case of AI being effectively deployed for caregiving and companionship. With more acceptance of social robots, it can very well cater to an increasingly aging population and the lowering birth rate. At #ausmedtech2024 we’re considering the use of #ai in #imaging with a panel of Alison Deslandes Dr Michelle Perugini Wenjie Pang and Mark Phillips moderated by Ludovic Labat : ⭐️ optimising workflow for clinicians ⭐️ highlighting details that may be hard to catch even by an expert…with resulting benefits to the patient in earlier identification eg of lung cancer, resulting in patients having more options for treatment 🤝 democratising healthcare through combining ai with handheld devices to reduce mortality associated with pregnancy and childbirth in developing countries 📖 challenges of including ai in clinical practice eg informed consent. Collaboration is critical to this process, and sharing the economic benefits. 🏎️ AI is developing at speed; regulatory change is slow as it should be (patient health is at stake) though sometimes regulation changes suddenly and you need to adapt 🩺 governance comes into play— leaders of healthcare organisations need to be assured that AI will work on their patients; part of this is explaining the validation process 💕 recognise that there is an emotional element to decisions as well as logical 🗝️ethics comes into play: how you collect and control data, and also the moral imperative to use AI once you know the benefits it can bring 🌳 there are sustainability payoffs in freeing up time of healthcare personnel and giving them more opportunities to show care 💥 the beneficiaries of these technologies are the patients yet the gatekeepers are the clinicians

AI was an unmissable theme at #SXSW24, one of the biggest innovation events of the year. Only one session featured doctors reflecting on the opportunities and pitfalls for AI in healthcare. As a clinician, tech entrepreneur, patient, and caregiver, our co-founder, Dr. Claire Novorol, reflected on the role of industry to preserve public trust by ensuring AI outcomes are vetted for accuracy, that data privacy is paramount, and that given the personal nature of the information being sought, experiences mimic human interactions. Healthcare AI that goes beyond one-directional responses by tapping into data from a comprehensive medical library and multi-question prompts can offer greater value and quality. Empowering patients with personalized healthcare information also facilitates more informed dialogue with clinicians for a more productive point of care experience. Clinicians in return are able to have more meaningful interactions with their patients leading to better outcomes, greater satisfaction, and more efficient clinical hours. AI also has a unique opportunity to offer reliable, accurate, and trusted care navigation in a way that removes biases and provides empowering validation of symptoms that can expand health equity and overcome barriers to care, often experienced by patients with stigmatized, politicized, or overlooked conditions. As the industry explores the opportunity for even richer experiences through the integration of LLMs, the opportunities, as well as the risks, are significant. For us, as Dr. Novorol noted, “That means you need an enormous focus on safety, and medical quality.” Among the audience members, FierceHealthcare reporter Anastassia Gliadkovskaya, captured excellent insights and a follow-up conversation with Dr. Novorol and American Medical Association President Jesse Ehrenfeld MD MPH in a thought-provoking article and podcast. In addition to drawing what she describes as one of the largest crowds at SXSW, she digs deeper into the opportunity to address gaps in health equity, particularly in such areas as women’s health, LGBTQ+ health, and rare disease. Hear Dr. Novorol at minute 8. Thank you also to co-panelists Mark Sendak of Duke Institute for Health Innovation and Alex Stinard, MD of Envision Healthcare for the excellent reflections. https://lnkd.in/dBEtRJc3 #HealthcareAI #DigitalHealth

I'm proud to be working on a solution where the true north star is helping people find meaningful healing. Doubly proud that we're doing this with some pretty cool tech innovations. We're putting AI in action to support providers in delivering value-based behavioral healthcare. Technology allows us to leapfrog over barriers that were previously insurmountable and to track outcomes and deliver evidence-based modalities with fidelity. In making it easier for providers to help the patients they're serving our aim is to also help them to heal from the burnout and administrative burden they've faced in this industry. We're entering a new era in healthcare, and I think it's a pretty bright one for both providers and patients. #aihealthcare #behavioralhealth #mentalhealth https://lnkd.in/ePx2UrJW
