The Supreme Court of the United States recently ruled on the case City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, which allows communities to pass laws that criminalize sleeping in public when no other safe and accessible shelter is available. NAMI Chief Executive Officer Daniel H. Gillison, Jr., issued an official statement expressing his disappointment in the ruling, which will undoubtedly have devastating consequences for people with mental illness who are unhoused. His statement reads in part: “Policymakers should focus on policies and programs that expand access to stable, safe and affordable housing for people with mental illness rather than criminalizing the basic needs of people experiencing homelessness. The NAMI Alliance will continue fighting to ensure everyone has the services and supports – like housing – that they need to get well and stay well.” Please click the link below to read Gillison’s entire statement. This is one more reason why our advocacy is essential. https://rb.gy/p86xwy NAMI Georgia #NAMIWalks2024 #Together4MH #StopTheStigma #RecoveryIsPossible #ReimagineCrisis #MoreThanEnough #Act4MentalHealth #GAParity #MentalIllness #MentalHealthSupport #MentalHealthAdvocates #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthCare #GARecovers

Lack of permanent, stable housing is a major concern in Oregon. It is a huge factor that leads to other health disparities including mental health challenges and health related concerns related to unhealthy living conditions. 23% of Oregonians are well below the area median income and there just isn’t enough housing in our state to support the increasing number of low income families that we have. This article highlights the housing crisis in Oregon and how crucial it is that we have more access to affordable housing in Oregon. 💡This Weeks Topic – Working with Children Experiencing Neglect💡 After reading an interesting article on Community Care, results from a study conducted by the NSPCC in 2021, showed that neglect is the most common reason for a child to be on a child protection plan or register in the UK. Neglect was also found to be present in three-quarters of concerning the death or serious harm of children in England between 2017-2019. The article mentioned that generally, our understanding of neglect often comes from our own individual experiences and perceptions, such as: 🔵 Experiences of being parented 🔵 Experiences of being a parent 🔵 Professional training 🔵 Personal or professional experiences 🔵 Awareness and recognition of inequalities and poverty 🔵 Cultural biases Peoples understanding of neglect can underpin their ability to clearly evidence levels of harm (or risk of harm) in line with local authority thresholds for intervention. This makes it more difficult to classify concerns, which may create obstacles for practitioners to identify neglect at the earliest possible point, resulting in added difficulty to get the right support for families, and to address issues before they escalate and become critical. But what do you think? What strategies can be implemented to overcome these challenges in identifying and addressing neglect cases with children? 💭 #socialwork #childrensservices #childprotection #haveyoursay

The Supreme Court will soon reach a decision in the #JohnsonVGrantsPass case, which will answer the pivotal question of whether all people in America are truly protected by the Constitution. This case holds profound implications for the rights and dignity of our most vulnerable citizens, particularly those experiencing homelessness. We cannot treat the most vulnerable among us as disposable. It is imperative that we recognize and uphold the humanity and rights of every individual. The only proven solutions to homelessness are providing people with housing and services. Criminalizing homelessness only exacerbates the issue and undermines the fabric of our communities. We stand firmly in support of #HousingNotHandcuffs. We believe in creating compassionate, sustainable solutions that address the root causes of homelessness and provide real opportunities for stability and growth. Let's advocate for justice, dignity, and housing for all. Together, we can build a society that values and protects every person. #AffordableHousing #SupremeCourt #ConstitutionalRights #HomelessnessSolutions #CommunityFirst #JusticeForAll
