When choosing a senior living community, there are numerous factors that should be taken into careful consideration. From the range of amenities and services offered to the expertise and compassion of staff, each aspect plays a crucial role in determining the quality of life for older adults.
One of the primary things to look for when choosing a senior living community is the level of care provided. It's important to make sure that the facility has licensed healthcare professionals on staff and offers reliable medical care. Additionally, it's essential to inquire about the range of services provided, such as housekeeping, transportation, and meal preparation.
Other important things to consider include:
- Environment, atmosphere, and culture.
- Location
- Cost
All in all, choosing a senior living community that meets the unique needs and expectations of each individual is a crucial decision. It's vital to take factors like care, environment, location, and cost into consideration before deciding on a place to call home.

So awe inspiring to see NSW celebrate the 25th anniversary of their Consumer Peer Work Forum. In 2023, we are striving in the NT to have a designated lived experience workforce recognised, supported and professionalised. We are still having conversations about the difference between ‘staff with lived experience’ and ‘staff who are trained to use their lived experience in an intentional way, that is recognised in their position description’. An annual consumer peer forum - like that NSW is celebrating- feels very, very far away.
Yet we hold hope, we dig deep, and we pour ourselves into the importance of our workforce - we know having access to a peer (even a clinician with lived experience who divulged that to us!) was transformational for our own recoveries. At the same time we recognise the importance of the broader movement of lived experience advocacy and engagement in the NT - another movement that we pour ourselves into in the NT when/as we can, unrecognised and unfunded. As the National Mental Health Commission supports the formation of new national Consumer and Carer peak bodies, it does not escape us that we remain the very last state or territory yet to establish a lived experience peak body, let alone two.
So much is asked of our lived experience advocates in the NT, without funding, without recognition of how the very system we seek to change affects our recoveries and that of our loved ones. How the work that we do (unpaid and unrecognised) impacts our health, our day to day lives, that of our partners and even that of our children.
Without acknowledgement or recognition of the cost, we continue to persevere - sometimes broken, often wavering and floundering, yet always believing in what know to be right and necessary.
So … in a moment of solidarity (and quite frankly, vulnerability), I want to send my profound love and support to all of my NT peers and fellow lived experience advocates. We may not always agree, but our hearts will always align. You all know who you are - forever in solidarity and hope of a better future 👊👊👊 never give up x

📢 Exciting news in the assisted living industry! A recent article from the BBC highlights a significant shift in Scottish politics, with the Labour Party making substantial gains in Edinburgh at the expense of the SNP. Let's take a closer look at the key points and their implications for our industry.
Firstly, veteran SNP politician Joanna Cherry's defeat to Labour's Scott Arthur in Edinburgh South West is a notable development. This change in representation could potentially impact the implementation of policies affecting assisted living facilities in the region. It is crucial for industry professionals to stay informed and engage in discussions around potential changes that may arise from this shift.
Furthermore, the Labour Party's gains in Edinburgh are a clear indicator of a changing political landscape. As the industry evolves, it is important to align with the current trends and adapt our strategies accordingly. Identifying new opportunities and adjusting our approach to meet the changing needs of our residents will be key in maintaining our competitive advantage.
Lastly, the appointment of Ian Murray as the Scottish Secretary highlights the Labour Party's rising influence in the region. This could have implications for policy decisions and funding allocation affecting our industry. Engaging with policymakers and stakeholders will enable us to contribute to discussions on how to best support the needs of our residents.
As industry experts, let's gather and discuss the possible effects of these developments on our businesses. How can we adapt to the changing political landscape to ensure we continue to provide excellent care and services?
