Such important food for thought on why journalism matters in this last column by Kyle Pope as Columbia Journalism Review editor and publisher, right before taking on a new role at Covering Climate Now. Two of the ideas that resonated with me most: << Pay no attention to audience metrics. Journalists lose faith in what they do when it appears no one reads their work, or when the work they do doesn’t have the impact they think it should. We need to think of this as a much longer game. Information now enters the media bloodstream in all kinds of different ways, some immediate, some longer-term. We don’t have a lot of control over how that will happen. Have a clear sense of what you want to say and why it’s important. It will find an audience eventually. >> << Remember that the response to stories isn’t personal. If audiences aren’t engaging with what you do, it’s probably not because they don’t like you. Sometimes, they’ll have a political beef with your news outlet. But more often than that, they’re missing the story because we haven’t found a way to make it resonate with them. We haven’t told the story in a way that matters. That’s on us. The more we can approach that problem with an open mind, and a resolve to connect, the more we can close the trust gap in journalism. >>

As I’ve continued my education with the Certification in Modern Journalism through New York University, the one topic that has stuck out is the idea that journalists, with the media accessibility today, are referees rather than gatekeepers. It is our job as consumers and providers of news to curate messages and insights to the voice and voiceless public. Being a referee to media 24/7 is an honor, and learning these tools so far has been an essential part in growing my own skill set. Not only for journalism, but communications, public discourse, and writing in editorial. #journalism #education #modernjournalism #nyu

"Issues in Contemporary American Journalism" is out and I am proud to announce that I am one of the authors whose work has been published in this book. Specifically, I wrote a chapter on participatory journalism titled, "A New Approach for Increasing Public Trust and Engagement." In this chapter, I have explained the phenomenon of citizen engagement in journalistic storytelling and proposed strategies to tackle fake news spread and dark participation on the web. Peace Journalism Peace journalism (PJ) has become more imperative today than when Johan Galtung wrote and stressed it. And it must begin to gain emphasis in our colleges and universities and journalism schools.
