Did you know that May is "National Inventors Month?" I must admit, I only recently discovered this myself! This revelation sparked my curiosity and led me to dig a little deeper into what this month really celebrates.  It turns out, National Inventors Month started in the 1990s, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the United Inventors Association of the USA, the Academy of Applied Science, and Inventors Digest magazine. They envisioned a month specifically set aside to encourage creativity and recognize the innovative spirits whose ideas have propelled industries forward. Originally celebrated in August, the event was moved to May to better align with the academic calendar, enhancing its impact by engaging students and educators. During this month, we not only honor the general spirit of invention but also spotlight specific innovators who have transformed the market research industry. This includes a focus on Black innovators whose contributions have often gone unrecognized yet have significantly influenced modern market research practices. Their work has paved the way for more inclusive and comprehensive approaches to understanding diverse markets. Recognizing these achievements is crucial. It helps in safeguarding intellectual property—a fundamental aspect that supports the economic and professional growth of inventors. It also educates and inspires the next generation of market researchers about the importance of diversity and inclusion in innovation. Policymakers can learn to speak the language of innovators and develop policies that use their languages and practices. What can innovators learn from policymakers? Deliberate strategy. Congress is an ongoing, 230-year chess match. Similar to chess, there are small moves that need to be made and decided early on to achieve the ultimate goal later. From the outside looking in, it may seem that nothing is happening in Congress, but that is never the case. The best policymakers can teach innovators to create a deliberate strategy and build coalitions as they execute. Q. What can policymakers learn from innovators? Don't wait until it breaks to fix it. The best innovators make something out of nothing and can see the potential for greatness from things that are already good. Too often policymakers are retroactively addressing issues through policy, rather than proactively encouraging solutions through future innovation. This past summer after a charge and semi-demand from the good and humble servant Keith E. Green II, MPH I applied and was invited to speak at the UNCF Unite Conference in Atlanta. Presenting my research and work titled, Decolonizing Writing with Black Joy: The Thematic First Year Composition Course, I worked with faculty and administration on what it looks like to use themed culturally relevant pedagogy to teach writing. I was brought back to that moment today as an attendee emailed to ask questions on implementing some of the strategies we spoke about. I asked my students last year to define “Black Joy,” and I asked the attendees to do the same thing on a smaller scale. What was astounding to me was not only the number of students that couldn’t arrive at a definition because of “only focusing on trauma in previous classes” or not knowing what it really looked like, but also in that diverse conference room many faculty were afraid to approach the topic and others felt like they had no right to define it. The cause? Systems that focus on hegemonic thinking instead of considering others as individuals (or groups of people) with thoughts and feelings of their own. When we ask students to write about the canon, or historical events or figures that evoke joy (holidays, sports, media, etc), we never consider that they are simply peering into someone else’s “joy.” So I challenged the room that if they couldn’t think of what Black Joy was or if they felt that they couldn’t describe it—to either ask or to try. Peer into (with fidelity) someone else’s perspective and attempt to define what you would believe brings that person joy. It’s not an easy task, but when it’s done it’s much easier to start to create empathy between each other as kind, thoughtful, and informed human beings. Secondly, when we ask our students to look inside themselves to develop thought and theory, we create students who will grow to be 21st Century skilled thought leaders. These thought leaders will go on to make changes, create policies, and become people who know the importance of celebrating everyone’s joy from their own unique and valuable perspective. And with that my challenge for you this week is to find out someone’s joy..and if you can, use that knowledge to make this world a much better place. P.S. As we come to the end of Black History Month, it is my esteemed pleasure to be with you all in my network as we announce FMF 24. This legendary event, taking place March 21-23, 2024 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas Nevada, will forever change the landscape of the creator community in Silver State. This is important, not just because we would like to see our film tax credit be more competitive with the market and surrounding states, but to show the impact the creator and technology communities can have on the economic growth and development of Nevada. As many people know, Las Vegas is the “Entertainment Capital of the World” and the “Convention Capital of the World”, however we as creatives, have not had an outlet or a collective that provide resources, tools, and people that help the next generation of award winners achieve their goals. The mission of FMF is to provide a platform that shines a light on the diverse array of individuals who weave the fabric of the quilt of entertainment, that is shared by us all. This annual event is more than just a headline or gimmick. It is something that is needed to create a sustainable future for the creators in Nevada; however, it will also be a platform to address our concerns as we move into the age of #AI, #Web3, and #AR. It will also provide access to the tools we need to generate more revenue and be more productive. What is our value as creatives in 2024 and beyond? FMF is focused on finding the solutions to the issues and challenges we face now and the future.
