SIMPLE: There are many professionals who have focused on the wrong side of the Be-Do-Have paradigm. Let me explain. For a long time; moving-up in Information Technology silos was heavily about what you had/have. I HAVE x years experience. I HAVE x certifications. I have x degrees. KEYPOINT: The employment/management contingency has a STRONG PAINPOINT HERE: THE LACK OF ABILITY AND WORK TIME INVESTED IN TRANSLATING THE HAVE TO THE DO AND THE BE. You can have the world; but WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH IT (aka What's the value-add of having x)? Du'An Lightfoot you have always advocated to #LabEveryday. This helps increase the ability to do and thus, BE-COME (BE). There is a great book called "Talent Is OverRated" by Geoff Calvin. Another great book is "Outliers" by Malcolm Galdwell. In all of these books; the shared theme is that you need to repeat doing for THOUSANDS OF HOURS so you can BE (and thus, can BE the answer today's opportunities DESPERATELY NEED). In short; we have too many people who have things and are not taking what they have and SPENDING THE LONG TIME with it DO-ING what these things so they can BECOME THEM! Ghandi once said, "BE the change you wish to see in the world"....NOT HAVE.

Building networks, clouds, and community; helping engineers grow; advocating for privacy and simplicity
Network engineering is not “going away.” Network engineering is not less important than it was yesterday, last year, or even a decade ago. But there still seems to be a gap somewhere. There are fewer folks interested than we need. We need more folks who want to work as full-time network engineers, and more folks with network engineering skills diffused within the larger IT community. More of both is the right answer if we’re going to continue building large-scale systems that work. The real lack of enthusiasm for learning network engineering is hurting all of IT, not just network engineering. How do we bridge this gap? We’re engineers. We solve problems. This seems to be a problem we might be able to solve (unlike human nature). Let’s try to solve it. https://lnkd.in/ejUvJGM3
