When we shot film we used to have the time to get it right in the camera.
Then we went digital and still tried to get it right on set, but generally we got it right in camera and what would be retouched would be minimal.
Then something happened in the last 5 or so years and now it’s not uncommon for shoots to be so poorly planned & produced, we don’t always get prep days, have so many shots and different deliverables plus the inevitable video/stop motion elements, that I spend almost as much time retouching as I do on set.
What has caused this? I honestly can’t say. I have several theories, but that is all they are. What I think is happening is a combination of factors and I would appreciate your perspective.
I‘ve noticed about 50% of my approaches that ask me for an estimate end up being rejected on the basis of ‘we don’t have the budget’. OK, so why ask for an estimate if you have already established budget? Just share your budget and I’ll either laugh at it, or get creative in our approach to make it work.
How they get to this budget, I have no idea. My guess is, but I may be wrong, that these budgets are based on lowest bid, which in turn might come from someone without the level of experience that a studio like mine offers. A studio that only shoots one subject and shoots it really well.
Again, my assumption might be wrong, but based on this i get the distinct feeling that a lot of these kinds of clients are not concerned about the craft & experience that we invest into all our shoots, they are only concerned about staying within an already meager budget. At this point I feel our hands are tied. How can we ever do a good job if the studio that has been rented doesn’t have a kitchen, if the stylists & photographers aren’t given adequate time to prep, if we can’t get enough of the product provided or we have to shoot so many shots we don’t get nearly enough time to shoot each one really well.
Is it really a cost saving to apply the lowest estimate and establish a budget based on that only to have so much retouching, OT & additional post production costs that my initial estimate would have ended up saving money on what is eventually spent.
Thankfully I have several long-standing clients who appreciate our approach and experience and they honestly are a joy to work with, but as I compliment these clients and their understanding of what it takes when experts are hired, I’m appalled at the amount of potential clients who simply refuse to listen to our perspective.
If you want a job done well, hire experts. You don’t have to come to me, but at least be selective about who you hire. I know you will be a lot happier for it. So will your client.
I often think of that old adage about getting cheap or getting good, but not being able to get the two at the same time.
I know this sounds like a rant and that isn’t my intention. I just want everyone to get better. To raise the bar & not lower it.
