A message from our Executive Director Ulises Zatarain. "As we bid farewell to a vibrant and enriching Hispanic Heritage Month, we at Tech Exchange are thrilled to usher in a new chapter focused on a cause close to our hearts - Digital Inclusion Month! Hispanic Heritage Month has been a time of celebration, honoring the incredible contributions of the Hispanic community to our culture, history, and society. It's been a reminder of the diversity and strength that makes our world so beautifully interconnected. The stories, traditions, and innovations shared throughout this month have enriched our collective tapestry and broadened our horizons. But as one chapter closes, another exciting one begins. Digital Inclusion Month is a time to spotlight our commitment to bridging the digital divide, a mission we hold dear at Tech Exchange. In an increasingly digital world, we firmly believe that access to technology is a fundamental right. It's not just about connecting people to the internet; it's about connecting people to opportunities, education, and a brighter future. At Tech Exchange, we understand that technology is the great equalizer, capable of breaking down barriers and empowering individuals and communities. During Digital Inclusion Month, we pledge to redouble our efforts to provide equitable access, education, and resources to those who may have been left behind. We're excited to launch initiatives, tech sales, workshops, and partnerships that will drive our vision forward, working hand in hand with local communities to create lasting change. By providing the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age, we aim to level the playing field and ensure that everyone has the chance to succeed, regardless of their background. So, as we transition from celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month to embracing Digital Inclusion Month, let's remember that it's all part of a grand narrative – one that celebrates diversity, appreciates heritage, and actively seeks to create a fairer and more inclusive digital world for everyone. Join us in this journey as we continue to make technology a force for good and inspire a future where no one is left behind. Together, we can help bridge the digital divide and build a more inclusive, connected world. At Newfold Digital, we join the celebration of Global Diversity Awareness Month. Diversity comes in all ways, shapes, and forms. And it's not always easy -or even possible- to see from a distance. That's one of the things that make conversations about diversity hard, we need to get an understanding first of what one means when talking about diversity. Through the Yoast Diversity Fund, Yoast is committed to taking away financial barriers for speakers at tech event who belong to a typically underrepresented group in tech. By doing so, we want to help tech events create a more diverse speaker line-up. And because diversity is so broad, we don't have preset categories, but instead ask the applicants for the fund in which way they add to the diversity of the event they're speaking at. And despite the fact that we've been running the Yoast Diversity Fund for years, every now and then we still get a surprising new answer to that question. So now I'm curious to learn from you. Have you ever spoken at a tech event (conference, meetup, etc)? Did you add diversity to the speaker line-up? And if so, in what way? #teamnewfold

It’s something that has the power to enable both empathy and exclusion; to provide us with new perspectives while simultaneously silencing other voices that deserve to be heard: technology. And while the tech platforms we interact with every day demonstrated their value in the lead-up to and during last year’s BLM protests, the companies and culture that created them have long-standing issues with diversity and inclusion. In this Black History Month episode of Disruptors, an RBC podcast, John Stackhouse is pleased to welcome as co-host Michael Carter, the Global Head of Technology Investment Banking at RBC Capital Markets in New York, for a compelling and complex conversation about the fight for equity in the tech sector. They’ll be joined by another voice that’s sure to be familiar to longtime listeners; Dax Dasilva, the CEO of Montreal-based Lightspeed Inc, who will share his perspective as a member of, and crusader for, both the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. The challenges are numerous: securing more investment funding for Black entrepreneurs, breaking down geographical barriers to diversity, and maintaining focus on the fight for racial justice in the face of other crises, like the pandemic. As you’ll hear from Tamar Huggins-Grant, the Founder and Executive Director of Tech Spark Canada, it’s not going to be a comfortable journey, but that’s OK, because she believes there has to be some level of discomfort if we really want things to change. Notes:For details on Lightspeed’s commitment to inclusion and diversity, click HERE. Dax Dasilva wrote an editorial in last summer’s Globe and Mail about the role of CEOs in fostering diversity, and he was also John’s guest on a previous episode of Disruptors: ”Diversity x Inclusion x Innovation”. John also discussed the lack of Black representation in the tech sector in February of last year, in the episode ”Why Are There So Few Black Entrepreneurs in Canadian Tech?”. Details on Tech Spark Canada’s mission to increase inclusivity in the technology sector are at techspark.ca. As 2023 comes to a close, I’d like to take a look back at the milestones and moments that shaped a tremendous year of progress. At Google, we continued to work towards creating a more equitable world by doubling down on our commitments. We empowered our communities through education and economic opportunities. For example, this year during Europe Code Week, we partnered with European Schoolnet to train 450 teachers on innovative lessons for students offering them the chance to share hands-on learning and important digital skills. We evolved our products to be more accessible, representative, and helpful. We updated Lookout, our app which provides people who are blind or visually impaired with audio cues as they encounter objects, text and people around them, with the latest in our AI technology. The new feature enables users to receive a description about images and ask follow up questions, making visual information more accessible. And finally, we hit important milestones in our efforts to create a more representative Google. As highlighted in our Diversity Annual Report, we achieved our racial equity commitment goal of increasing leadership representation of Black, Latino and Native American Googlers by 30%, three years ahead of our 2025 aim and furthered our DEI work across many of our local markets. Pressing onward into 2024, I look ahead expectantly and excitedly at a year of incredible potential. I’m excited by the opportunity to uncover new and innovative solutions in this space. Reimagining Entry: From “Breaking into Tech” to Walking Through the Front Door The phrase "breaking into tech" implies a struggle that goes beyond mere challenges – it evokes an image of attempting to access something forbidden, illegal, or unethical. This terminology not only perpetuates the negative connotations associated with underrepresented groups entering the tech industry but also undermines their accomplishments and contributions. It's time to shift this narrative. African Americans and other underrepresented communities are not "breaking in"; they are rightfully taking their place within the industry, contributing their unique talents, perspectives, and ideas. By reimagining the terminology and emphasizing a sense of empowerment and legitimacy, we can create a more inclusive environment that encourages diverse participation.
