So how well do your key functions like HR and Finance work together? “Not at all? They don’t really cross over.” Hmmmm So if this is how your business operates you need to have a serious think about what you are potentially missing here. Are HR frequently spending money with no approval? 💰 💰 Are finance agreed and aware of company initiatives before the invoice turns up? Are both clear on any payroll adjustments this month? Are both clear on bonus and commission payments due this quarter? Does finance know three of those staff due bonus or commission have actually had disciplinary action this month? ⛓️ The recruitment team are hiring twenty new staff for the service department but finance have not been involved in any approval of hiring? Shawny - So what would your advice be to senior payroll professionals looking to step up into leadership? Rebecca Fletcher - My advice would be to have a very, very good think about is this for you? You know, part of my job description isn’t just being a manager and coming in and telling people what to do every day. You know, there is far more to it. I think given my payroll background, that’s one of my things that, I really do try and drop into department heads or anyone that has to sign off on timesheets. That’s a part of your role. You know, the people in your team are part of your role. So having great technical skills and being an amazing payroll officer doesn’t always lend itself to someone being the right fit for a manager position. It really is something that you do need to be very passionate about and know what you’re sort of getting yourself into. It’s not, you know, peaches and cream every day. You take on the weight of your entire team, and if someone doesn’t get paid properly or on time, that sits with you, not the payroll officer. So it is. It’s a lot of work. You know, the amount of additional hours that I’ve done through my management career, I would love to calculate. But I do it because I love doing what I do, and I think that that’s where it lies. You know, progressing for the sake of progressing is probably not the best way to go about it. I wanted to quickly shoutout my fellow HR, Payroll/Accounting people out there - former and current colleagues, friends, family, and anyone else who has ever worked in these types of departments. I see you and what you do matters! Many times these groups are looked down upon, feared, accused of “doing nothing all day” since we are not the ones making money for a company; we are not manufacturing products, or packaging items, or making sales, etc. But there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that most don’t see - important stuff like making sure everyone gets paid on time and correctly, making sure healthcare is taken care of by setting up,adjusting, assisting with benefits, making sure we are in compliance with many complicated and various laws and regulations. We are working hard to help our teams hire the right people in the right positions. We are advocates of growth and development. We are trying to create a culture that thrives on efficiency and even fun. We are keeping things flowing in the background so that employees are able to do what they do best. We are problem solvers, the unofficial therapists, peacemakers, career planners. Sometimes these feel like thankless jobs, but we keep going. So to anyone out there in these roles - you are appreciated! 🙌🏻 #hr #payroll #accounting
