This is a massive win for Broadway. This is the first new musical to recoup since the pandemic that wasn't around before the pandemic . . . which means I don't think it got "save our stages" $ to restart. So, how did & Juliet do it? From the outside, I see three reasons. 1) It's not just a great show, it's a great FUN show, which is what audiences want to see. 2) They get a family audience, so the average order is probably closer to 3 than 2. Sure, fun date night, but the teens love it, too. 3) The music. Duh. OH and a bonus . . . which may be the most important. 4) It had a $17mm capitalization. In the sea of capitalizations over $20mm, they kept theirs down. The degree of difficulty for recouping a Broadway show is higher than ever. Super props to the great producing by #MaxMartin, #TimHeadington, #TheresaSteelePage, #JennyPetersson, Martin Dodd, and Eva Price. Let's hope this starts a trend! https://lnkd.in/eSXvfd-2

The next TRU Community Gathering on Zoom: DO ALL THESE MUSICALS BELONG ON BROADWAY? Friday 6/28/24, at 5:00pm ET In the room: FRANKIE DAILY, new works director of NAMT (National Association for Musical Theater); and PETER FILICHIA, former New York-based theater critic for The Star-Ledger, writer and historian of the American musical theater. In 2023-24 season 15 new musicals opened on Broadway, the highest number since the 2016-17 season. Assumptions about what constitutes a Broadway musical have changed over the decades and the financial challenges of off-Broadway have lured some smaller shows into the commercial spotlight. Nevertheless, some musicals have found a level of success without the Broadway stamp of approval. Are there realistic criteria for success other than being a Broadway blockbuster? Have you seen the musical "42 Balloons" ? I went to the theatre last Friday to see the musical "42 Balloons," based on a true story from 1982. The production was not only moving but also delivered a powerful message about the pursuit of goals. The story centres on a protagonist driven to achieve a daunting objective. Having achieved his goal, and with no other purpose than achievement he is left with the task of paying off a great loan, through interviews telling his tale. The essence lies in understanding why we chase these dreams; is it for personal fulfilment, benefiting loved ones, or impacting our community. Without a clear purpose, achieving a goal might leave us feeling empty. The musical prompts a reflection on our motivations and the deeper implications of our ambitions. Leaving the theatre, I found myself reassessing my own goals and their underlying reasons. "42 Balloons" is an excellent blend of entertainment and existential inquiry, ideal for those who seek thought-provoking content. Remember MoviePass? The program that allowed you to see UNLIMITED movies in theaters for free, all for a low monthly fee. In NYC back then, you could see any movie any time for as many times as you wanted . . . for only $35/month. Naturally, I couldn't help but wonder how we could implement this for Broadway, Off Broadway, regional theatre, etc. And I actually introduced The AltarCard on my Off Broadway show #AltarBoyz which allowed super fans to see the show as many times as they wanted in on month for $199. It was like the Unlimited MetroCard for the show! 🙂 To be honest, like MoviePass . . . it was the biggest marketing success - but for a few of our diehards, it was exactly what they wanted. And hey - we tried it. Because when it comes to marketing (and anything), I often ask myself . . . What's the worst that could happen? And then ask yourself: what's the BEST thing that could happen? And if the BEST outweights the worst (which it usually does), you GO FOR IT. Which show would you see over and over again if Broadway had a BroadwayPass? (Like these marketing posts? Look for one every other Monday. #MarketingMonday) https://lnkd.in/euUSZWsK
