Practical wisdom for leaders - I was interviewed recently for the “Phronesis” podcast. In a relaxed and quite personal discussion, Scott J. Allen and I talked about my research into leadership in professional organizations. We discussed the origins and development of my work on collective leadership. And, in a wide-ranging conversation, we explored: o How I became an academic who works closely with practitioners. o Leaders I have known: Chess players vs. shape-shifters. o Power, politics, and populist leaders in times of crisis. o My podcast: How I make it, and my favourite episodes. o Disrupting academia and avoiding “intellectual junk food”. Listen to the podcast via the image below which takes you to my website. The interview with me starts at minute 1:40. https://lnkd.in/ekbRvmxA

Trust isn't just a word; it's the cornerstone of effective leadership. We highlighted an essential contrast in our podcast episode: the difference between "prove me wrong" and "prove me right" attitudes in leadership. Many leaders operate under the assumption that trust must be earned, placing employees in a constant state of proving themselves. But imagine the shift in dynamics when a leader starts from a place of trust, saying, "I trust you; prove me right." This approach not only uplifts but also empowers. It fosters a culture where mistakes are part of growth, not failures to be penalized. Sure, there might be instances where adjustments are needed, but the primary stance is one of confidence and support. Are you building a culture of trust or skepticism? Some food for thought here for my Board level connections following our recently published Chair & NED research... What is the difference between a "great" Board, and a "not so great" Board"? As the pressure increases on NED's to become more physically involved in the business, how involved is "too" involved? How can the psychological safety of Executives be fostered to create a high performance culture? How much of a Risk appetite should you have? Please listen to this podcast from my Criticaleye colleagues Emily Jones and Matthew Blagg to hear the above points and more explored... If you would like to find out how you can become more involved with Criticaleye, gaining exposure to a full variety of Board level perspectives, please get in touch with me today. #NED #Chair #Boarddynamics #psychologicalsafety #highperformance #leadership

A COMMON BIAS IMPACTING LEADERS Leaders frequently get swayed by power without even realizing it. We often attribute our success solely to our skills and choices, overlooking the role of external factors like the power we wield. It's only when situations shift that we truly grasp the impact that power had on our achievements. This phenomenon is known in psychology as the self-attribution bias. It emphasizes how individuals credit themselves for positive outcomes but attribute losses to external factors, such as bad luck.
