I had the pleasure to attend the The Global Steering Group for Impact Investment (GSG) "Impact Summit" in Malaga. An important global event aiming to shape the movement of impact by bringing together experts, leaders and standard setters from the worlds of finance, business, policy-making, and society. The main topics were: ◼ Mobilising capital for people and planet, where it is most needed ◼ Achieving full transparency in measuring impacts ◼ Building impact economies I met many interesting people and discussed how to create impact, how to measure it, and how to shape it. 💡 Here are my key takeaways: ⏩ Creating impact is at the top agenda of politicians, investors, and organizations globally. ⏩ However, the definition and understanding of impact is still very different and I recognized that impact is often primary connected with profit.  ⏩ From my perspective, we should see impact more holistically. 🌍📈 Report: PRI in Person event - Tokyo, Japan 📈🌍 Last week (16/10), the Institute of Finance hosted a thought-provoking presentation by Dr. Helena Naffa, PhD, inspired by the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and her experience from the recent PRI in Person event held in Tokyo, Japan (3-5 October). The PRI, a UN-supported network of investors, seeks to promote sustainable investments, focusing on the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. Here are some key takeaways from Dr. Naffa's participation in the international event: 🌿 Emerging Disciplines: Emphasis on the emergence of nature finance and biodiversity finance as forming new disciplines. 🤝 Collaboration is Key: Academic research in biodiversity finance is evolving in close collaboration with industry professionals. From the investors' perspective, active ownership strategies are most efficient when done as collaborative engagements, especially around policy. 🌏 Systematic Risk: Biodiversity loss risk is now recognized as a part of systematic and systemic risk. Universal asset owners and asset managers cannot diversify away from these nature-related risks. 🌱 Just Transition for the Global South: A focus on a just transition for the global south was underlined, emphasizing inclusivity of the social element with the transition to a sustainable economy. 📊 Carbon offsets: net zero commitments are becoming hard to uphold with the greenwashing that faces carbon offsets. There is a need to demonstrate intentionality via additionality. On September 6th, the Tech For Good Institute was invited by Financial Times to participate in the Moral Money Summit Asia, a two-day conference focused on unlocking the potential of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in Asia's business and society. 🤝 Joined by esteemed panelists from STACS and Orca Capital, the panel delved into insights regarding sustainable digitalisation and how technology can be harnessed to enhance society and sustainability. 🌱 Here are some key takeaways: 1️⃣ Apart from propelling economic growth, tech innovation must also serve society. Tech and the business models they enable need to be responsible, which means taking accountability and avoiding harm. At the very least, they should ensure safety, build confidence, and earn trust. 2️⃣ Digital technology should be utilised to empower the entire value chain and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), recognising the significant value derived from data and analytics. 3️⃣ Digital sustainability involves achieving sustainable goals through digital solutions. Here, digital solutions offer substantial potential beyond merely being responsible. They can also serve various roles, including being supportive (preventing harm), facilitative (increasing efficiencies), and transformative (creating impact through technology). Ming T. In an engaging conversation, Jeremy Nicholls Mariona Gonzalez of SpainNAB and Suzanne Jenkins from ESADE Center for Social Impact, delved deep into the world of impact. They shared their insights and reflections on various facets of impact measurement and sustainability. - Jeremy Nicholls illuminated the importance of selecting the right metrics to truly account for the real cost of lives and incorporating these into our accounting systems. His expertise in impact measurement provided a solid foundation for understanding the necessity of accountability in our actions. - Mariona González brought to light the current shaping of the Spanish ecosystem, with specific examples from the impact investment sector. Impact measurement can build a common language between impact organizations and investors, putting the same meaning to words that now are understood differently - Suzanne Jenkins shared a crucial insight at the event: It's common not to have enough data to fully understand our impact, but that's perfectly fine. It was a great pleasure to return to Singapore—a hub of innovation and collaboration—amidst the engaging discussions at the #FASTConference, part of Ecosperity Week. Reflecting on the conclusion of the #FASTConference, it's clear that conversations surrounding #sustainablefinance and Asia's energy transition are more critical than ever. While the challenges ahead are significant, so too are the opportunities. The conference underscored the urgent need for innovative financing solutions to bridge the region's financing gap and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. Emphasizing the role of the public sector and MDBs, blended finance emerged as a key mechanism for unlocking private capital at scale for Asia's green transition. There is great potential for cooperation with Singapore 🇸🇬 and like-minded partner institutions under 🇪🇺#GlobalGateway, to foster sustainable growth in the region and beyond.

SUSTAIN TOMORROW - climate crisis is here and we may only have 5 years left to act… Yesterday, I was fortunate to participate in #DanskeBank event about tomorrow's most pressing issues. Some of the topics discussed by panelists of thought leaders were what role capitalism, democracy, and new business models should play in financing a sustainable future. The event was kicked off with passionate and insightful presentations by CEO #CarstenEgeriis and #TommyAhlers. Maybe not surprisingly, we need to work together across all parts of society to solve the significant challenges facing us. And even if the future looks uncertain, it is equally full of opportunities. But the time to act is running out. We may only have 5 years left to make the necessary decisions to prevent our planet from passing several tipping points. This requires bold moves and leadership across lawmakers, corporates, and consumers. And Denmark is well-suited for playing a leading role in creating a sustainable future. We have some of the best universities, innovative entrepreneurs and startups, as well as leading ‘green’ companies and Funds. Hence, Denmark has a unique opportunity to foster and scale the technologies that are not yet fully developed to achieve global net-zero CO2 emissions before 2050. And hopefully as a result hereof also build new, big Danish corporates. #SustainTomorrow

❗Our current European framework carries too much risk of green and impact washing. That’s why we need to define #impact #investing. Now! Ananda Impact Ventures decided to join the #UnitedForImpact initiative 🇪🇺  The movement gathers 32 referent impact funds from 14 countries, representing a large part of the #European impact private equity market at various investment stages. 🤔 Why? In 2018 EU’s Sustainable Finance Disclosures Regulation (SFDR) introduced articles 6, 8 and 9 funds in 2018 to support 'sustainable investments' but this framework now lacks clarity. The Commission recently launched a wide consultation to assess #SFDR, and proposed to draft a more precise product categorisation including a new category specifically targeting impact solutions. We support this proposition. It may seem like a technical debate, but it is not! 👉 Capital should be massively reoriented towards impact-driven companies aligning business performance with the resolution of major environmental and/or social challenges. Sustainability is no longer optional; #impact should be the new paradigm 🌍 🌱 A well-defined framework and precise definitions are essential to foster the EU capital market and achieve our continent’s sustainable development objectives.
