Transforming the global Food and Agriculture system is such a critical challenge and one that doesn’t get covered in mainstream media nearly enough. The latest report from Jonathan Foley and Project Drawdown lays out the staggering impact Food and Agriculture has our planet. (Link to full report in the comments) One critical area to address within this larger system is Food Waste, which the IPCC has estimated accounts for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To put that into perspective: - GHG emissions from food waste are nearly THREE TIMES (3x) the amount of global emissions from aviation! - If emissions from global food waste were a country, it would be the world’s third largest emitter. Only China (21%) and the United States (13%) emit more. As I’ve explored ways to address food waste systemically, the role of supply chain intervention has become increasingly evident — almost one-quarter (24%) of food’s emissions come from food that is lost in supply chains or wasted by consumers. To that end, one of the areas I am currently researching (and actively seeking roles in) is upstream interventions and solutions in the Food & Ag supply chain to reduce food waste. Very true, the global food system is the back bone of the future of humanity on earth. Hence the need to invest in climate resilient crops for food sustainability to insure food security for humanity on earth. Crops such as cassava, millet and sorghum just to mention a few do not need heavy rains for them to thrive.

#GrowingForGood is daring to imagine a better future for the entire European food chain, where each member is supported and working collaboratively to achieve sustainability. Together, we can accelerate progress, which begins by opening the dialogue. I was honored to be invited to join the conversation on December 12, exploring the role of farmers in delivering the EU's climate objectives, a topic I am passionate about. The voice of the farmer needs to be represented and their perspectives heard. They are doing tremendous work to transition and will continue to do so, but they cannot do it without training, funding, and access to innovations.  In every conversation and policy that impacts their work and livelihoods, their voices must be represented. No one knows better than a farmer what is practical, achievable and sustainable. We ask a great deal from the farmers in the EU. Although many problems persist with “regenerative” livestock agriculture, shifting towards plant-protein dominant regenerative & agro-forestry based systems is a no-brainer. Enabling the natural carbon cycle while protecting topsoil and the myriad microorganisms we depend on for healthy natural food systems is a key necessity as we move forward this century. Intensive & extractive agricultural practices worsened by synthetic fertilisers must all be phased out as quickly and decisively as the inevitable energy-system fossil fuel phase out too. Many nitrogen-based fertilisers are manufactured using the Haber-Bosch process, which demands vast quantities of liquid methane gas in order to produce these. Not only do synthetic fertilisers destroy soil, and lead to the toxic eutrophication of waterways and rivers - their manufacturing also produces massive amounts of climate-warming emissions. Humans rely on healthy systems, and healthy systems rely on healthy inputs. In order to help ourselves we must help the ground beneath our feet first.

The world needs a new way of doing food -- from how we grow it to how we eat it (or don't). This much I gathered from Jonathan Foley's talk today on why food matters in our fight against climate change. 🌽 In its current state, our food system does not feed everyone in the world, and it continues to cause more environmental harm. 🧩As a systems person, this sounds like a broken system . . . or at least an inequitable one that needs updating. 🌽 In terms of Greenhouse Gas emissions, FOOD (agriculture & land use) contributes ~22% of GHG. 🐮 But actually this sector causes GHG emissions in others too, totaling ~34% together, and still growing. This is why Project Drawdown is starting an initiative this year focused on bringing new solutions to our food system, something near and dear to my heart (stomach) and I'm sure many of yours.
