Thrilled to have had a productive meetings last month with colleagues from Rutgers University. Our discussions on advancing mating disruption strategies for Diamondback Moth (DBM) were insightful and promising. We also discussed approaches for managing Codling Moth (CM), Oriental Fruit Moth (OFM), and Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD). Exciting collaborations ahead in our mission to enhance sustainable pest management across the United States. #sustainability #farming Natalia Cockle | Kristian Holmstrom

Check out this insightful piece by Dr. Peter Gittins, a farming and entrepreneurship expert. He sheds light on the hurdles that farmers are grappling with as they move away from the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS). The article tackles issues such as the introduction of new Environmental Land Management Schemes and the increasing pressure on agriculture to achieve net-zero goals. This discussion is grounded in the early findings from a research project at the University of Leeds. Read more ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/evdmfGUA #Farming #Sustainability #NetZero

Author Tuna Wars (Springer), researcher and consultant on sustainable fishery and ocean policies, blogger, writer, economist.
Has the Marine Stewardship Council reached the limits of transparent and inclusive management of fishery stocks? Read my blog on the recent postponement of a number of announced measures around the new Standard 3.0 and harvest strategies. MSC is treading on dangerous ground for its credibility. That can never be the intention of a certification that claims to advance the proper introduction of harvest strategies. It’s a good moment to reconsider. https://lnkd.in/dWaAN2DA

🌍The Talbot River Healthy Environment Initiative supports farmers in the Upper Talbot River subwatershed to improve water quality throughout the region and downstream in Lake Simcoe. The initiative aims to implement Best Management Practices (BMPs) that protect and enhance riparian areas- the transitional areas between water surfaces and uplands. What are some BMPs supported by the initiative? ➡️Buffer Strips: Adding permanently vegetated buffers along streams, rivers, ponds, wetlands and lakes to stabilize soils, slow the flow of stormwater runoff and act as a water filter. ➡️Exclusion Fencing: using physical fencing to exclude livestock from riparian areas lessens sediment disturbance and manure deposition in waterways. Finally, someone who says it the way it should be said :-) Are you ready to be un-Canadian enough to get open-net pen salmon farms out of British Columbia's waters once and for all? Some facts: - Open-net pen salmon farms release deadly pathogens, parasites and pollution into the ocean, right in the migratory pathways of Pacific salmon - Open-net pen salmon farms are harmful to wild Pacific salmon and all the species that rely on them, like killer whales, wolves, bears, eagles and ancient forests - Canada’s government just gave the companies that operate the open-net pens 5-year extensions on their licences! They don’t have to be out until June 30, 2029 - Wild salmon can't wait another five years - In 2019 Prime Minister Trudeau promised Canada would transition away from open-net salmon farms by 2025 - B.C. is the last place left on the Pacific coast of North America, where open-net pen salmon farms rear Atlantic salmon - More than 120 First Nations support the removal of open-net pen salmon farms - At least 70% of Canadians support a transition away from any marine salmon aquaculture to a sustainable land-based sector Read more: https://lnkd.in/eBq3h5Xu Pacific Wild #salmon #salmonfarming #aquaculture #fish #pollution #parasite #greatbear #greatbearrainforest #britishcolumbia #canada

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with SQF Institute (thank you to Carey Allen and Stefanie Sonneveld in particular) on this digital seminar, 'Integrated Pest Management: An Introduction to Sustainable Pest Management and Sustainability Audits.' This webinar also includes valuable information on pollinators. I hope this will be helpful to those wishing to know more about Integrated Pest Management (IPM), particularly with respect to the implementation of IPM practices on-farm. On another note, I now know how to use Zoom more effectively and realize that I didn't need to record it all in one take 😐. #IntegratedPestManagement #SustainableAgriculture #Pollinators #SustainabilityAudits #IPM #Agriculture #Farming #SQFI You can find the webinar here:

🌍 Funding opportunity! Grants of £50k-£150k for peat innovations. One of the biggest (and wildly underreported) climate challenges is the ongoing degradation of our peatlands across the world. As peatlands dry out, they release millennia of stored GHG emissions, which in turn raises global temperatures in a scary feedback loop. If this is an area you're active in, especially as it relates to: 📉 Reducing reliance on peat growing media ❎ Removing peat entirely from crop supply ☘ Sustainable management of peat soils Then take a quick look and see if your work could benefit!
🚨 New funding alert! If you’re working to find new ways to grow food without damaging peatlands, this could be for you! Round 3 of our Carbon Innovation Fund is focused on the reduction of peat usage in the food and farming industries. Why? Because damaging peatlands is bad for the environment, as they hold so much carbon. Applications on 14 Feb 🙌 Interested? Transparency. Without it, there's no sustainability. Yet the world's Regional Fisheries Management Organizations try to claim their catches are sustainable - without giving stakeholders equal access to their discussions, or to the facts about what's really going on. The Equal Access Principles aim to level that playing field. To give all stakeholders a seat at the table and visibility of the facts. They're a key step towards real sustainability. Learn more - and endorse the principles today ➡️ https://principles.fish/
