A few weeks ago, we introduced the incredible members of our girl gang in the Philippines. :) Now, it's time to present one of our stars, or we should say "our sun" 🌞 - Soleil Rivera! Soleil, whose formal name is Denise, has been working in the recruitment team for just under two years. Despite her formal name, she prefers Soleil, though clients often know her as Denise.:) Soleil works as both a tech recruiter and an administrative coordinator, showcasing her versatility and dedication. Her never-stop-learning attitude is something we all admire. Working in the follow-the-sun model is demanding and requires a lot of effort, coordination, and dedication, and our sun - Soleil - definitely has it. Bumped into my brother in arms, Joshua David Chai in the office earlier. I was so glad to find another person wearing batik in PwC Malaysia that I had to take this photo! Looking at the motif designs, I believe he's wearing batik Sarawak, while mine is probably batik Kelantan (if I got this wrong, please correct me!). It's really fascinating to see how rich the batik heritage in Malaysia is, each with its own unique history, design, and philosophy. I've had a few people inquire why I choose to wear batik nowadays. Well, it wasn't really a deliberate strategy; I just find it more comfortable. I started wearing batik during the last Ramadan because there were many buka puasa events at that time. Gradually, I started wearing batik more in the office because I simply find it more practical, especially in our hot weather. I don't have any particular issues with business suits and ties; they do indeed look very smart and stylish. But let's put it this way: if we analyse the entire physiology of our current business attire, you would probably conclude that the whole objective of such clothing is to retain as much heat as possible for the wearer. With its thick collars, tight neckties, tucked-in shirts, and long sleeve cuffs, it's pretty much guaranteed to increase your body temperature by a few degrees. Which is fine if you are walking in the fine streets of England, but less practical if you are walking under the shadeless streets of KL Sentral. So here's my tribute to Malaysian batik, our tradition, and our heritage. My hope is that one day it will be more common to wear batik to professional events and business meetings. In this regard, I feel the Indonesians have got this right; they are really proud of their batik, and I think we should be proud of ours too. Because our country has such a rich heritage, and it would be a shame not to celebrate it. #batik #heritage #pwcmalaysia #businessattire #tradition #Malaysia
