As we contact more architects about our program and what SPC Alliance is all about. Most ask the same question: why should I pay for a door hardware specification when I can get it free? This is our response. A factory specification writer writes a free specification for one of the four larger companies. They are an employee of said company. Their interest is getting their company specified and keeping the specifications intact and their product used on the project. Manufacturers who know they have control of a specification do not discount the project at bid time as they would if they did not write the specification; if it were an open bid, their discount would be far more profound. So, the architect's client pays a premium for the work. An independent writer writes a fee-based specification without an alliance with hardware manufacturers. They work for the architectural firm and its client to ensure that the hardware specification is written fairly and balanced to ensure a competitive bid. Thus, the cost to pay for a specification is offset by the considerable difference in price that the owner pays for the product at the end of the day. Having an independent fee-based door hardware specifier on your projects would be best.
