For the zoo industry to not only survive, but also to advance we need our keepers and guide's to step up and take on the challenges of leadership in management positions. If this doesn't happen then more and more zoos and safari parks will follow the backwards way of thinking that anyone can do the job and will employ individuals with no experience or skills to fill the management positions and cheap unskilled labor to take care of the parks collection and guests, resulting in the downward spiral of the parks professional standard. Zoos and Safari parks that already practice this procedure of hiring unskilled, inexperienced and unprofessional people in management positions because of who they know or even because they are related to someone in management soon become a laughing stock within the zoo industry and quickly gain the reputation of a place to stay away from if one values professional standards. The exact same result also applies to those parks that think that they will save money by hiring cheap unskilled and inexperienced people to take care of the parks collection and visiting guests. When doing a parks audit or KPI, I personally like to meet each and every one of the keeping and guiding staff and set three professional goals to help them advance in their career. One is achievable in the next six months and the other in the next twelve months, explaining to the staff member that both goals are within their capabilities if they believe that they can do it and don't let negative thoughts sabotage their progress. The third goal is a long term goal, such as reaching a management position in the park they are already working in or in another park. The decision to move forward in your career within the zoo industry is really yours alone. But first you need to believe in yourself and that you can do it. timhusband2005@gmail.com
