Charles Barkley is “100 percent” concerned about TNT’s future with the NBA. TNT Sports is battling NBC for the final piece of the NBA’s next TV rights deal. Its current contract with the NBA ends after the 2024-25 season. When asked by ESPN Chicago about the future of "Inside the NBA," Barkley, who has been part of the broadcast since 2000, said those involved in the studio show "have zero idea what’s going to happen." The custom NBA in season court designs are a great example of designing for the internet, not for TV. The basketball courts have been polarizing amongst fans and painful to some viewers on TV. What strikes me is they must really pop on quick highlights online or in social media, but seem completely detrimental to long term viewing. The “in season tournament” is already there to try and change viewing dynamics where fans didn’t engage until the season’s stakes increased, are the designs another shift in what viewing experience the #nba is prioritizing? https://lnkd.in/eJjwWkru

The new NBA media rights deal, starting in 2025-26, will feature ESPN/ABC, NBC, and Amazon as primary broadcasters, shifting the focus from local networks to streaming platforms. This raises concerns among team owners like the Knicks' James Dolan about the potential obsolescence of local networks and the associated loss of local sponsorship revenue, a crucial source of basketball-related income. The shift could erode this reliable income, potentially lowering the salary cap and affecting player compensation tied to league revenue. If the league unilaterally prioritizes streaming over local broadcasts, it might set a contentious precedent by bypassing the collective bargaining process. This could lead to disputes over the management of the league’s intellectual property and revenue distribution. Ensuring inclusive decision-making is essential to balance the interests of teams, players, and broadcasters, maintaining financial stability and fair compensation. By involving all stakeholders in the process, the league can better navigate the changing media landscape while protecting the economic interests of its franchises and athletes. 1500% rise in WSL viewership from 2020/21 to 2022/23 which could result in over 2x increase in the value of media rights for the Women's Super League, according to analysis by Nielsen Sports and Prospect in their new report. WSL have made all 132 league matches available for broadcast in the tender for the next season unlike in the previous deal where only 57 matches were available to Sky and BBC. Interest has been shown by TNT Sports and DAZN, while Sky and BBC are also likely to bid to renew their partnership with WSL. (Mail Sport) The staggering growth of interest and focus on Women's Sport continues, as seen from the renaming of a London Overground line to 'The Lioness Line' last week. It would be really interesting to see the new value placed on Women's Super League media rights by the broadcasters for the 2023/24 season. #WSL #WomeninSport #sportsbroadcasting #sportsbusiness #sportsbiz #mediarights

Things in Media rhyme & repeat a lot, a clear example of this is seen. There's another on-going 'Media War' between the world's two largest streaming or content hosting giants. Most likely everyone reading this has used at least one of these at one point of your life in the last 10 years. Should push come to shove between the two giants, for ultimate supremacy it should be pretty clear who's going to win. For reference - look at how the 'WCW vs. WWE War' ended & what made it easier for the WWE to win besides purely their content offering. (Product) Also ask any passionate WWE fan what the after effects of this "war" was once WWE one. Same / similar pattern to be expected. Of course this 'war' is subject to no more Black Swan like events. 🙈 #Media || #Streaming || #Marcom
USA’s Failed WWF Lawsuit Does Not Bode Well for Turner’s NBA Lawsuit Back in 2000, WWF (a predecessor entity to WWE, which is now part of TKO) struck a media rights distribution agreement with CBS (who was in process of being acquired by Viacom, which is now Paramount) for its TNN network (which became Spike and is today the Paramount Network) to air WWF Raw, ending the 17-year history of airing Raw on the USA Network (owned by USA Networks at the time and now owned by NBCU, a division of Comcast). When you read the opening section of the 2000 Delaware Court opinion, embedded at the bottom of this post (utilizing New York law as designated in the original agreement), it feels very relevant to the pending litigation in New York Supreme Court between Warner Bros. Discovery’s Turner Networks and the NBA LightShed Partners Rich Greenfield Brandon Ross Mark K.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to improve their negotiation skills. Not because Mike is a friend, but because he not only shares his successful negotiations, but also instances where it did not work out well where he then provides the lessons learned as a result. The book also serves as a lesson plan to prepare and execute a negotiation strategy.
Warner Bros. Discovery is suing the NBA over media rights. It is not surprising considering how difficult my negotiation with the NBA for home entertainment media rights. The NBA negotiates like a pick-up basketball game - they keep you off balance with elbows, shoving and arguing calls. My recently published book, THE NEGOTIATION EDGE provides insights of my negotiations with the NBA, NFL and NHL in chapters 12 and 13.
