Open funding opportunity from @NASEM Gulf Research Program! Up to $4M available to support projects that provide youth with opportunities to learn about and apply Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) in the exploration and examination of environmental hazards and their effects on the health and resilience of communities in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico region.   Proposals will be accepted from nonprofits and community-based organizations with 501(c)(3) status, which provide environmental justice programs for youth in grades 9-12.   Applicants must request at least $75,000 for projects commensurate with the scope of work, that are up to 24 months in duration. Celebrating University of Canterbury Tom Logan's Royal Society Te Apārangi Rutherford Discovery Fellowship: "In this fellowship, Dr Tom Logan will develop a holistic, multi-criteria, and quantitatively rigorous approach for multi-hazard intervention analysis and adaptation planning that will enable a transformative shift in how we prepare for the future. Dr Logan will evaluate the effects of interventions with indirect and cascading risks using real world applications. For example, building a seawall to protect a road may devastate an ecosystem, which could in turn affect access to mahinga kai, and diminish the cultural value of an area." My latest fact-checking venture: helping Grist writers and editors look through a ton of historical info and financial data regarding land rights for universities that should go to indigenous students/communities. Many universities across the U.S. are profiting from land that was often forefully taken from indigenous people. They continue to make millions from these lands today: "In combination with other land-grant laws, UArizona still retains rights to nearly 687,000 acres of land — an area more than twice the size of Los Angeles. The university also has rights to another 703,000 subsurface acres, a term pertaining to oil, gas, minerals, and other resources underground. Known as trust lands, these expropriated Indigenous territories are held and managed by the state for the school’s continued benefit." The writers/reporters that worked on this were amazing and so knowledgable. For those in the UK, today is A Level results day. An important period for our young teens as they embark on what their next pathway might be in terms of education and future careers. Regardless of the results. It is worth noting exam results are never a prediction of how successful one will be in future. It is simply a milestone and you should not be disillusioned by it. If you didn’t recieve the results as expected. Please remember that I actually failed my A Levels and had to go through UCAS Clearing back in the day. Back then I never predicted my trajectory to becoming an industry ambassador for the landscape profession let alone a joint fellow title holder. So let this be inspiration. I've been honored with an invitation and subsequently voted in as a member of the University of Idaho Rangeland Center's Partners Advisory Council. This new role, which I am embracing in my personal capacity, marks a pivotal moment where my passion for rangelands and commitment to sustainable development converge. Riding through my beautiful backyard, I've taken this opportunity to reflect on my research concerns and the critical needs facing our rangelands, Tribes, and Nation. The balance between ecological sustainability, energy and critical materials is a delicate one. As we push forward into an era of innovation, the stewardship of our rangelands remains paramount. I am serving in this role independently, and my views are my own, not reflecting those of any agency or institution. With the Texas University Fund (TUF) on the ballot in November as Proposition 5, Texas Tech's next 100 years look like an opportunity to change the world.  From its humble beginnings, Texas Tech has emerged as a Carnegie Tier 1 research institution. Last fiscal year, the university spent more than $230 million on research. With the anticipated support from the Texas University Fund, the possibilities are endless. The permanent university endowment of around $3.9 billion would allow the state to invest heavily in the research being done by its top universities, but it will require a constitutional amendment approved by Texans. The TUF comes with no new taxes and the distribution to universities will be dedicated to research resources. The endowment would allow Texas Tech to take its already impressive research activities to an even higher level. https://lnkd.in/guCaNAvt
