Social Media Updates Alert! 🤩 🎵 TikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG) have reached a new agreement after UMG pulled its songs from TikTok in February 🎶 This multi-dimensional licensing agreement promises fairer compensation for UMG's talented artists and songwriters, along with “industry-leading protections” against generative AI, and provision for new promotional and engagement opportunities for their latest releases on TikTok 🚀 Back in February, UMG claimed that TikTok was offering far less of a share than the previous licensing arrangement, while TikTok argued its value was greater than UMG would acknowledge. But now, Universal is back on board, marking a win-win for both sides 🎉 🎵 Meta's Threads app is seeing increased usage in the U.S. To incentivise more creators to join, Meta is offering select creators from its other apps up to $5,000 to post on Threads. If their post surpasses 10,000 views, they could qualify for a payout. This is an invite-only program aimed at boosting Threads' popularity 💰 🎵 After weeks of telling creators to stop crying about their reach and follower count in the app, Instagram has announced a major algorithm update to boost original content creators 📈 The update includes: 1️⃣ Removing and discouraging aggregator accounts from content recommendations. 2️⃣ Labelling reposted content to direct users back to the original creators of content. This could be the most interesting and significant element 💡 3️⃣ Spotlighting smaller accounts as opposed to prioritising larger creators 🔦 💡 It's a pretty cool update but there is a risk. If IG moves away from showing the top-performing posts based on engagement, it could negatively impact the user experience. It's a complex balance between keeping engagement within the app high and shining a light on emerging creators. But if Instagram can get through it, that could be BIG. Happy Monday! 🌇 Let’s talk: Algorithm Changes and TikTok So, over the last 2 months I have noticed a real shift in the way TikTok content is created as well as viewed. I will be honest when TikTok first announced they would be integrating photos into the platform as a new form of content I did not expect it to do well, and I initially thought it would end up a temporary feature. And after the UMG situation I must say it was looking bleak for short form content on TikTok. However, photo trends have taken TikTok by storm. This as well as the new Repost feature now allows creators and viewers to connect on a different level - boosting the content for the creator and bringing a new form of ‘meme-like’ communication to TikTok. This is seen in the new Espresso Trend stemming from Sabrina Carpenter’s latest single, as well as YBT Fatt’s ‘Secrets’ trend. I think this is a shift no one saw coming and shows TikTok’s ability to tap into new forms of content, and even the potential for music streaming as show in Douyin. TikTok has welcomed an update allowing text-based posts available to all users. This new addition allows TikTok users to share a different form of content with full-screen text, music and stickers. These text-based posts can be up to 1000 characters long, accompanied by your choice of background colour, font and placement within the frame. This new sense of creativity is presented in a way that is similar to Instagram Stories’ text-only updates. This includes: 👉Posting Restricted Content: Content that goes against TikTok's rules, such as explicit material or hate speech. 👉Bullying or Harassment: Targeting individuals or groups with negative or harmful behavior. 👉Copyright Infringement: Using copyrighted material without proper permission. There's a new trend in TikTok town, but is it here to stay? In a new feature to keep its community engaged, TikTok recently launched TikTok Shop, a way for users to directly purchase products used in videos.
