France is navigating a complex coalition puzzle after a left-wing surge in the recent elections. The New Popular Front (NFP) emerged as the dominant force but did not secure a majority, resulting in a hung parliament. President Macron's centrist alliance and Marine Le Pen's National Rally trail behind. Green party leader Marine Tondelier and other NFP figures now face the challenge of forming a government. This situation raises questions about France's domestic agenda and its role in the European Union. The political landscape remains uncertain as the parties negotiate. #WNO #France #Politics #Election2024 #Coalition #Macron #NewPopularFront #EuropeanUnion

There’s a chance that Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National will get an absolute majority in parliamentary elections, even as polls currently expect a relative majority. Our column this week offers a close-up exploration of the French electoral map and assumptions made in a model by Arnaud Lacheret and Philippe Bouis to arrive at an estimate of 320 seats. Models are to be taken with a pinch of salt, but something seems to have snapped in the Fifth Republic https://lnkd.in/dWYZpfsD

🇫🇷😅In a surprise result, France’s left-wing alliance is projected to beat the far-right in the second round of a snap parliamentary election, according to an IPSOS estimate. New Popular Front is projected to win 172 to 192 seats — well short of the 289 that would secure an overall majority. President Macron’s centrist party, Ensemble, will win 150 to 170 seats and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally will come third with 132 to 152 seats, the estimate says. 🙃

My latest article for Perspectives Magazine explores the current fragile state of European politics. As the nationalist right seeks closer political cooperation, in particular in the European Parliament, I argue that it should now be an immediate priority for the European left to come together and unite. With the upcoming European Union parliamentary elections, the right wing parties appear on track to take over 20% of the seats. Should a viable coalition of right-wing parties emerge, this poses a genuine threat to both the short and long-term stability of the EU. I believe it is the responsibility of the European left to come together to face the united efforts of those European politicians, whose views are fundamentally opposed to the institutions and principles of the European Union. You can read my article below 👇🏻
