It was just reported that Canva is doing over $2B/yr in revenue. Melanie Perkins and her team have built a once-in-a-generation company not through hype or code or luck but through great strategy. They recognized a truth that now seems obvious, but at the time (over 100 rejections by VCs) was not: there is no design software for the 99% of the world who are not designers. It's inspiring to me in figuring out our strategy for airpost.ai. Where is the gap in video that no one sees yet? If we could enable 99% of the world to easily "shoot" and edit a UGC ad in minutes, would it matter? Would people come? Strategy is about doing your best to understand the reality around you and to be as realistic as possible about who might find value in your product to solve what, when. It's one of my favorite things to work on, as hard as it is to get right. Do you spend a lot of time on strategy at your company? Has it paid off?

Happy birthday to Canva. Today Canva's 10th birthday. One of the wonderful start-up we should admire. We can learn a lot from this company. I am writing an article about them for startup success. And today its not just a wishing post. Even on their birthday they teach extraordinary marketing lesson. Yes, look at the image below. It is a pop up came on to wish Canva's 10th birthday. In each of the activities they insist on engaging the user. "We couldn't have made it without you and 18 designs you have created" - The user is valued and appreciated for the contribution - Best personalisation made with the 18 designs made by the user - insisting to create another Canva story for user engagement. We all read about Canva Create in the past week. As someone on the production side of these events, it begged the question, how do you thread that line between cringe and engagement/entertainment? Here’s my take: First and foremost, authenticity is critical. Does your stunt comport with your company’s culture? Does it align with your participants’ character? If not, that’s a big 🚩! If you’re joking with your team about how un-aligned the stunt is then please, please, step back and start again. Always be careful of top-down creative decisions. It’s easy for those at the top of the org chart to be out of touch with those below. Especially when it comes to every day work culture and employees’ feelings about and attachment to their company identity. Involve many levels of the organization in the creative planning and solicit feedback in low-stakes ways. Last, be bold and be self aware. This Canva story all of a sudden made total sense to me when I learned the company was founded in Perth, Australia. I spent a year backpacking Oz and one thing I can say is that Aussies are bold and know how to make fun of themselves (and others). My suggestion is that if you’re going to do a stunt make sure there are no half-measures. The only thing worse than a cringey stunt is one that is done half-heartedly. No one likes seeing someone apologize for their cheesy joke while it’s being told.
