Don’t be THAT sports parent. Instead be the parent who…
1. Asks, discusses and supports your athletes goals or desires.
2. Focuses on effort and enjoyment over outcomes
3. Cheers from the stands instead of coaching from the stands (if you want to coach, volunteer! Many organizations need coaches)!
4. Adopts an “ask don’t tell” mentality. It’s amazing how much they know when you ask!
5. Listens to understand instead of to respond or to give your opinion.
6. Actively looks for and gives truthful and specific praise for efforts, especially when outcome based success isn’t there.
7. If issues arise, such as your child wanting more playing time, empower them to discuss it with the coach directly. There is power in an athlete asking their coach “What can I do to get better and earn more playing time.”
8. Resists sports specialization before the age of 12.
9. Let’s your athlete know that you love them unconditionally, regardless of their athletic performance.
