I never thought I would have to say this, but Dame Judi Dench is wrong. Let's first set the record straight about WHO & WHAT trigger warnings are for: ✅ People (audience members) with PTSD and other anxiety disorders ✅ People who may experience severe physiological reactions to content related to their trauma That's it. That's the list. They are NOT for: ⛔️ People who get easily offended ⛔️ People who don't want to be surprised, disturbed, shocked, or upset ⛔️ People who are "sensitive" Ok! Now that we're all on the same page. Let's talk about trigger warnings in the theatre. Unfortunately, many theaters present trigger warnings front-and-center in the program or they announce them during the curtain speech along with strobe & fog warnings. Now, industry legends like Dench, Matt Smith, and Ralph Fiennes have weighed in saying these act as spoilers, ruining the impact of the show. Dame Judi Dench even went so far as to say, "if you’re that sensitive, don’t go to the theatre." Instead of having a simple, productive conversation about how to present trigger warnings in a manner accessible (yet strategically hidden), we're stuck debating whether trauma victims should just stop watching theatre. 🤦♀️ Here's a personal example of what being triggered looks like: While attending a regularly scheduled company all-hands, a guest speaker began showing graphic photographs and reading extremely detailed accounts from other trauma victims. As he read, I began to feel nauseous. My body temperature spiked. My palms covered in sweat. I began shaking and sobbing. Within a few minutes I went from perfectly fine, to throwing up. It ended my day. I was forced to leave the meeting, cancel all my appointments, delay even some projects because I physically couldn't work. If, however, the calendar invite or intro email had included a trigger warning, I would have prepared a cope-ahead plan or even not attended the meeting. And I would have been FINE. In Dench's view however, I guess I should just not go to any more all-hands meetings...? Or watch movies? Or go to the theatre? Nah. Instead, how about we welcome those with PTSD. ➤ Put a QR code on the program for people to look up trigger warnings ➤ Provide a link to trigger warnings on the ticketing site, so people with trauma can check before purchase ➤ Wanna get really simple? Tell the House Manager what the trigger warnings are & let patrons know that the HM can provide that information if needed Dame Judi Dench is a gem. We should protect her at all costs. We should also explain trauma to her, so she can get her foot out of her mouth. Lastly, shout out to Dropout, Sam Reich, and Brennan Lee Mulligan for doing trigger warnings exceptionally well. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #ptsd #triggerwarning #mentalhealth

I was reminded recently by the inspiring international consumer leader David Oaks of the power around sharing stories of lived experience, particularly the silenced and marginalised, such as Madness as a form of wisdom and pride. VMIAC have always been a wonderful supporter of my activism in re-attentioning power in the psychiatric system to traditional healing and embodied ways of partnering with people from social, cultural, spiritual and structural determinants. I am a massive believer in disability justice, lived experience leadership and abolition, as reform will not change the fundamental colonial, patriarchal and sanist systems that view our human diversity as illness and disease requiring control, restraint and coercion. I came from intergenerational mental health, child abuse and neglect, family violence and the foster care system, only to interact with a psychiatric system that medicalised trauma, oppression and poverty. I hope this video from 2020, provides some ideas for what I am about, and some hope for those that enter 'the system'. Lived experience can be a superpower, it can also kill. I am all too aware, but please consider the power of vulnerability and harness your authenticity as you are not alone <3 Feel free to comment below on the power you have harnessed from your lived experience? #livedexperience #mentalhealth #socialjustice #psychiatry #consumer #humanrights https://lnkd.in/giFfmkDG

The pain might come later from mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI).... his daughter doesn't know, such brain injuries cannot be seen with the naked eye . Wondering what Kevin O'Leary would say 🙂 https://lnkd.in/gsMZtXhz Fast, reliable solution should include brain scans and precise therapy. EEG scans, at a fraction of the cost of SPECT or MRI, are highly reliable. The brain maps can be used to provide precise therapy to target the brain region that is dysfunctional . See an example, brain dysfunction in red colour before therapy. After precise therapy (TMS, TPS) that targets the location of brain dysfunction likely less or no brain dysfunction (no "holes" in SPECT scans) and less symptoms! https://lnkd.in/gTrQNRJ #mentalhealth #anxiety #suicide #traumaticbraininjury #mtbi #addiction #psychiatry #ptsd #tmstherapy #TMS #health #tmstherapy #brainhealth #suicideprevention #addiction #addictionrecovery #AddBrain_Inc #addiction #sleep #insomnia #insomniaproblems #insomnie #insomnio #recoveroutloud #overdoseawareness #hope #substanceusedisorder #recovery #treatment #trauma #alzheimers #alzheimersawareness #community #support #cognition #technology #mentalillness #suicideawareness #suicidio #depression #anxiety #ADHD #addiction #suicideprevention #psychiatry #tmstherapy #TMS #health #tmstherapy #military #brainhealth #AddBrain_Inc #addiction #recoveroutloud #overdoseawareness #hope #substanceusedisorder #recovery #narcansaveslives #youareworthit #youarenotalone #youcandoit #youareloved #youmatter #treatment #trauma #anxiety #community #support #love #motivation #events #technology #money #mentalhealthawareness #politics #political #therapy #psychiatrists #suffering #highrisk #provide #wecan #pharma #novonordisk #Celexa #allergan #AstraZeneca, #elililly #GlaxoSmithKline #Lundbeck #johnsonandjohnson #Pfizer #merck #strategicpartnerships #iplicensing

Although interest in the relationship between mental imagery and psychopathology has increased greatly over the last decade, few publications to date have examined relationships between personality-related psychopathology and mental imagery use, abilities, or both. Substantive relationships may exist. Studies have consistently linked psychopathy to problems in emotion experience and emotion regulation, and a growing number of studies indicate that deficits in visual mental imagery use and ability in particular may contribute to such problems. bit.ly/3PLNrbA Consider duct tape, for example. We use it to fix nearly everything, from patching a hole in a sneaker to making an emergency hem in a pair of pants. Studies have found that duct tape can also remove warts as well as or sometimes even better than the standard therapy of liquid nitrogen. lnkd.in/eFR77Ykn Warts are caused by a virus, which can be killed when it’s deprived of air and sunlight. Cover a wart with duct tape, and that’s exactly what happens. Given this explanation of the underlying process, the therapeutic power of duct tape sounds much more credible to ordinary people. Most of us are more willing to derive a cause from a correlation when we can picture the underlying mechanism. And although we can only see a short distance ahead, we can see plenty there that needs to be done. We should also view distance as maintaining proper position, including the positions we grant to others in our daily orbits of work, school, and personal relationships. Whoever manages the distance manages the damage that can be done. Imagine you are waiting to be served at a bakery on a busy Sunday morning. Just as someone behind the counter begins to take your order, another customer aggressively says to you, “I was here when you walked through the door. Don’t jump me in line.” Both you and the counter person explain that you were indeed there first. Only, the other customer is becoming more roiled with every word. You sense that the other customer is about to completely lose control. This is obviously not about who gets the last rye bread in the bakery. It’s more likely that the other customer has had a bad morning, week, or month, and that this moment has become their tipping point. You decide that a further tug-of-war over this issue wouldn’t serve anyone’s best interests, especially the other customer’s emotional state. That’s when you politely step aside and let the issue go—you don’t want your opponent bring you to a place where you don’t want to be, physically or emotionally.
