SPINEL Luc Yen, Vietnam Spinel, hosted in either marble or placers, was discovered in Luc Yen in 1987, together with ruby and sapphire. In Luc Yen, rough spinel crystals occur in dolomitic marble with calcite, phlogopite, humite, and pargasite. Formation takes place in metasomatic zones resulting from the percolation of fluids in the marble. The crystals, which range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters, are of octahedral habit and have a red to brownish red color. Why choose marble for a worktop? 1. It's beautiful. Maybe I'm biased but I just don't think that the manufactured alternatives are the same. 2. It's sustainable. You can find out lots more about the sustainability credentials of natural stone from Stone Federation Great Britain 3. It's restorable. Etch marks, scratches and stains can all be removed from marble and it can be made to look as perfect as the day that you installed it. Personally I'd leave a worktop to wear and develop it's own finish, with each mark telling a story. But for those that demand perfection, this is possible too. The longevity of stone is probably the thing that makes it the most natural choice or any surface. Marble is never going out of fashion. While the term “stonework” can be used quite generally to describe any work involving stone from jewelry making to masonry, the term “stoneworks” is quite specific. It refers to the quarry or facility where stone is cut, dressed, and prepared for use.

Know your stone. Quartzites are sandstones that have metamorphed / transformed through pressure and heat into quartzite. Sandstones are sedimentary stones that through this transformation became quartzite. Since Mother Nature is the fabricator and designer here there is no exact time frame when the transformation has reached the quartzite point. Some sandstones could be close but not really there. So many sandstones are wrongly sold as quartzites. How can you differentiate between the two? Take a sample and put some water drops on the unpolished side. If it absorbs then sandstone, if it hardly absorbs quartzite. Check the slab, is it vitreous and dense? Then quartzite. Quartzites have been compressed to the point where the sandgrains are not visible. Do you see small points resembling sand grains? Then sandstone which is at an earlier stage of transformation. So keep an eye on this to see in which stage of metamorphism the stone is. For low absorption you need fully fledged quartzite.
