Did you spot this incredible necklace strung with benitoite beads in the latest Journal of Gemmology (Volume 38, No. 6)? 💡 A Gem Note explores the origin of the rough benitoite material used to fashion this necklace and how each piece was hand-shaped and polished to create 640 beads in total. According to the author, the yield after drilling was just over 3.5%, resulting in four necklaces measuring 16 inches long. 📸 Necklace with beads ranging from 3 to 6 mm in diameter, which were cut and polished from translucent material that was obtained decades ago from the Benitoite Gem mine in California, USA. "Is This Stone Traceable?" With a growing need for sustainability in all spheres of life, consumers are interested in the roots and source of gemstones. Establishing a transparent history of a gemstone's journey is the aim of traceability, which ensures moral behaviour and transparency. Gemstones sourced from reputable mines or suppliers often come with certification from organisations like the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the International Gemological Institute (IGI). These certificates detail the gemstone's characteristics and sometimes its origin, aiding in traceability. The traceability of a gemstone depends on various factors, primarily its origin and the processes it undergoes from extraction to market. Furthermore, technological developments have brought forward techniques to improve traceability. Some gemstones feature laser inscriptions or microchips with information about their origin and journey. The turquoise blue, is a butterfly found in southern Europe, Asia Minor, the Ural Mountains, Caucasus and Transcaucasia. Its habitats include flowery meadows in rocky areas at 500–2000 m. Male above of a very glossy and peculiar blue; the female often smaller than the male, black-brown, with or without reddish marginal spots. The underside is unmistakable, the ocelli being reduced to a very few so, that the white forewing is usually without markings from the base to the reddish yellow submarginal spots. Females upperside bears near the base of both wings or only on the forewing intensely bright metallic blue spots, whose glitter can be distinctly perceived even in the flying.
