https://lnkd.in/dk_SMfZp The Data on NATO Responsibility Sharing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently released the Alliance’s latest defense spending figures which highlighted that eighteen NATO allies are reported to be on track to meet the 2% defense spending target in 2024, meaning that the defense portion of responsibility sharing is increasing. But the 2% target only captures military and defense spending rather than what allies are investing in broader national security requirements. CSIS decided to analyze what, exactly, NATO countries are spending on these broader requirements, discovering a reasonably optimistic picture of transatlantic “responsibility sharing.” Please join the CSIS International Security Program for a virtual discussion focused on the NATO burden sharing debate and the misconceptions behind the hidden measurements of what allies are doing and how they are doing it. Amounts of military assistance specified in the agreements (€ billion) for 2024: 1. The UK - 3.0 2. Germany - 7.1 (a record value here) 3. France - 3.0 4. Denmark - 1.8 5. Canada - ? 6. Italy - ? 7. The Netherlands - 2.0 8. Finnland - ? 9. Latvia - 0.1 10. Spain - 1.0 11. Belgium - 1.0 12. Portugal - 0.1 Some agreements do not separate the amount of military and economic support, so it is unclear how much will be spent on military purposes.
