Wow, exciting news to hear that Jerod Mayo, a former star player for the New England Patriots, has just become their new head coach! At only 37, he's the youngest coach in the NFL and the first Black head coach for the Patriots. Really great reading the responses from current and former NFL players which shows the amount of respect he has across the league. Mayo was an amazing player after the Patriots picked him in the 2008 NFL Draft. He even won the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award that year. He also helped the Patriots get to the Super Bowl XLVI. Mayo's transition from a celebrated player to the youngest and first Black head coach for the Patriots demonstrates a shift towards embracing more diversity in leadership roles. I think even more interesting is learning that owner Robert Kraft had a special plan to make Mayo the head coach and succeed Bill Belichick for a few years now, so he moved quickly, without a long search. Now, what can we learn from this appointment by Robert Kraft & the New England Patriots... and what does it mean more broadly, as someone who values diversity and inclusion? 📣 Merit-Based Opportunities: Mayo's appointment based on his skills, leadership qualities, and past performance as a player and coach highlights the importance of merit-based opportunities in talent acquisition and promotion. 📣 Long-Term Planning for #Diversity: The fact that Robert Kraft had a vision for Mayo's succession indicates strategic long-term planning. This is an honorable and, frankly, an overdue decision by the MLB. The Negro Leagues showcased some of the finest professional baseball players, who were excluded solely because they were Black. The existence of the Negro Leagues was a direct result of racism and bigotry, making it a necessity for participation in "America’s Pastime." These players endured hardships, often sleeping on buses because hotels refused them entry due to their race. Some players, like Jackie Robinson, were undeniably exceptional, demonstrating the elite talent within the Negro Leagues. History: Josh Gibson was considered the best power hitter of his era in the Negro Leagues and perhaps even the majors during his tenure from 1930-1946. The 6-1, 220-pound Gibson was nearly indestructible behind the plate. He occasionally played left field or third base, but never for more than a game or two. The Sporting News, baseball’s written authority for decades, credited Gibson in 1967 with hitting a 580-foot home run in Yankee Stadium. The ball landed two feet from the top of the bleacher wall. In 1972, Gibson was elected to the Hall of Fame. He passed away on Jan. 20, 1947. No matter how late in the day or night it is when the final agreement is made, you need to ensure that the terms are detailed enough to address all of your client's issues. I recommend attorneys address these issues before the mediation when you know there are controversial terms or details. In our case, we were there when Jimmy Butler sunk three free throws to take the lead late in Game 6 of the 2023 Eastern Conference Playoffs against the Celtics. But late-game heroics by Derrick White and a missed defensive assignment (or just a great offensive play) allowed the Celtics to score with .1 seconds to beat Miami.😧 Still, we all had a great time and witnessed a part of sports history. Clayton Kershaw is undoubtedly going straight into the Hall of Fame when he's done playing....but how much does he still have left in the tank? Let's dive into some key numbers for the soon-to-be Free Agent: 2023 Season: ERA: 2.52 K%: 26.3 BB%: 7.5 xWOBA: .302 Career: ERA: 2.48 K%: 28.9 BB%: 4.7 xWOBA: .262 So, what do these numbers tell us? Well, in addition to the fact that Kershaw will pitch more innings this year than last, he has shown he can stay healthy while maintaining remarkable consistency in his excellent performance. Now, the standout decline has come in the form of his Fastball Velo, which is to be expected given his age. How has Kershaw adjusted for this? By wisely increasing his SL and CB usage, which has allowed him to still generate high whiff rates, continuing to post above average seasons into his age 35 season.
