Did you know that the #African_Disability_Protocol (ADP) entered into force in June 2024? The ADP is a vital legal framework guiding African Union member states in developing disability laws and policies. Inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (#CRPD), the ADP reflects a social and human rights approach to disability. Adopted in January 2018, the ADP officially entered into force on 5th June 2024, following its 15th ratification on 5th May 2024. This #milestone was achieved through dedicated advocacy by organisations of persons with disabilities across Africa. The ADP addresses inadequacies in the African human rights system, tackles deep-rooted issues of disability discrimination, and promotes community living and inclusive development. More info: https://lnkd.in/dgXUnH6t The photo shows Dr. Papa Mamadou Diop from the African Union (right) sharing announcement of the entry into force of the ADP with Dr Thomas Ongolo (Regional Advisor, GIZ Global Project Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities) at AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa. Activism Against Ableism Project transnational meeting in Porto! The partners of the AAA project met in Porto in the framework of the 2nd transnational project meeting. They had the chance to discuss the development of the value proposition for the handbook as well as for the In-Service Training Programme, and the materials and resources developed for it. The 2nd LTTA has been scheduled in April 2024 hosted by Connectus in Greece. The project aims to foster #socialawareness on #disability and #ableism by supporting Young European citizens with disability to become socially and politically active, promoting their #participationandactivism regarding disability policies and challenging social, cultural and employment policies that favor ableism – the #discrimination and #socialprejudice against people with disabilities that favors able bodied people.

Thinking about systemic ableism... "It's time to stop asking: Why are they doing this? And start asking: Why am I allowing this?" Matthew Hussey (dating expert and confidence coach) Matthew is of course talking about romantic relationships, as he does, but this is the question we will each have to answer if we want the culture change we need to finally acheive the goals of the UN's Convention on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities, Americans with Disabilities Act and the Accessible Canada Act, etc: Equity, access and justice for all disabled people, not just wheelchair users. #AccessibleCanada #ADA #AODA #AMA #NSAA #ABCA #NLAA #ASA #CRPD #legislation #policy #CultureChange #intersectionality #InclusiveFromTheStart #HumanRights #disability #justice #inclusion #cdnpoli #usapolitics

Today, our Policy Manager, Alexandre Bloxs, is attending a crucial dialogue with Mario Nava, the new Director-General of DG EMPL. This meeting aims to strengthen collaboration between DG EMPL and civil society organisations (CSOs) by understanding their priorities and exploring how DG EMPL can best support them. EUD highlighted the necessity to increase the visibility of national sign languages (NSLs) within the EU to achieve social equality. "Deaf people can do anything as long as they receive the opportunity to interact in their national sign languages," he remarked. EUD also called for the next Disability Rights Strategy action plan to have a flagship initiative on national sign languages. #EUD #DGEMPL #Inclusion #DeafRights #Accessibility #EUDialogue

As we reflect on the outcomes of #COSP17, it is evident that accelerating disability inclusion requires concerted effort, data-informed decision-making, and meaningful engagement with voices within and across the disability movement. UNPRPD Fund remains committed to leveraging its position as the only UN interagency mechanism focused on implementation of the CRPD to translate policy, commitments and conversation into meaningful action. We are grateful for the invaluable support of our donors that make our incredible work possible and hope for continued and expanded support to improve more lives of persons with disabilities globally! The week was full of learnings and reflections to share and celebrate! Day 3 We're in #Wassu, #CRR, continuing our regional stakeholder orientation campaign to raise awareness and promote the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (#PWDs) in #TheGambia. Alagie Gimish Ceesay, Secretary General of the CRR North regional disabled organization "Ku Kutna Mento" (#KKM), shared a concern close to many hearts: "Despite progress, #PWDs in CRR North still face significant barriers to participation in society. Accessibility remains a major issue, from public buildings to transportation systems. We're often excluded from services and opportunities readily available to others." We stand with Alagie and the KKM. Together, we call for increased awareness raising, Everyone deserves to understand the challenges faced by #PWDs. Stronger enforcement of the 2021 #PWDAct, this act guarantees equal rights and opportunities for all. Let's work together to create a more inclusive Gambia for everyone. https://lnkd.in/exMYm-Ru #NationalCouncilforCivicEducation-TheGambia #UNICEFGambia #GambiaFederationOfTheDisabled. #UNPRPD #disabilityinclusion #equalrightsforall
