TheWrap reports: "The share of unscripted #streaming original shows has fallen each quarter since Q4 2021." Why? We dig into the data:
"Two factors are behind this shift. The peak pandemic years of 2020-21 saw a boom in streamers releasing new unscripted shows. Q4 2021 was the high water mark when 37.4% of streaming shows that premiered that quarter were unscripted. But from 2022 onward there has been a transition back to more scripted content from streamers. The fourth quarter of 2023 punctuated the change. Fewer than 10% of new streaming series to premiere last quarter were unscripted — a record low in the past three years."

Watching the evolution of streaming has been fascinating. Many pieces have been talking about the streaming wars like they're all but finished, so I really like that this acknowledges that the competition is still going strong.

For this month's article, I briefly give my thoughts on re-watching media and how my viewing habits have changed since streaming services have come about. I hope you all enjoy it!
Story Nexus: Revisiting Media in the Era of Streaming:

Interesting video that delves into the evolving landscape of streaming platforms, drawing parallels between its current state and the cable era of the 90s, it highlights the recent developments in streaming, such as the introduction of ads on previously ad-free platforms like Amazon Prime Video, signal a departure from the original streaming experience.
The rise of competing platforms like Hulu and the influx of advertising dollars into streaming services are noted, highlighting a shift away from the initial cord-cutting ethos.
Subscription fees have steadily increased, accompanied by the segmentation of premium features like 4K and HDR into additional paid tiers, diminishing the value proposition for consumers.
The narrative predicts a future of consolidation among streaming services, led by legacy media conglomerates, resulting in fewer shows with larger budgets and potentially a return to a more communal viewing experience.
Despite the challenges posed by the changing streaming landscape, there is speculation that reducing the number of must-watch shows could lead to a more stable and affordable streaming ecosystem in the long run.

"The report lays out the Top 10 most-streamed titles in 2023 (...) not a single streaming original broke into the Top 10 this year. Again, that is affected by the runtimes of the projects on the chart; long-shows like “Suits” and “NCIS” were easily able to push out more current titles that have only aired a few seasons. At the same time, the absence of a single original title on the Top 10 demonstrates that 2023 — marked by the Hollywood strikes — lacked any major streaming event that reached the ubiquity of years past.
For example, in 2022, though eight of the 10 most-streamed titles were acquired rather than original, (...)." #streaming
Variety doing the good work. While the overall dataset is skewed by the massive cancelations that happened due to Warner/Disco merger there is still a lot here.
Interesting to see higher cancelation rate for streaming than for linear. One would assume linear needed to act quicker when titles don't work due constant ratings pressure and limited schedule space but this isn't the case. Streaming cancels more. This may be due to sheer volume of productions but as some have pointed out the current streaming/guild agreement may be to blame here too.
Get ready for some more price hikes in streaming. Come October, Hulu + Live will be the most expensive live-tv streaming service in the US outside of Fubo. It used to be the cheapest in its class.
The good news is that if you like ads, you aren't going to see that much of a hit to your wallet.
Comparison of all the streamers in the comments.
