Hot off the press! Just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, our client Nielsen, has released the 2023 Hispanic Diversity Intelligence Series report, entitled "Hispanic Audience in Focus: Trust in Media - the key factor driving shift to streaming.” For the first time ever, Hispanic adults' streaming time has surpassed 50 percent of total time spent TV viewing (13 percent higher than the general population at 37.7 percent), leading the streaming revolution. The report also highlights the pivotal role trust plays in this transformation, with over 50% of surveyed Hispanic respondents considering trust in news and information an issue of exceptional significance, reaffirming the community's unwavering demand for credible and authentic content. Language also plays a key role in trust, with younger generations of Hispanics finding Spanish language programming more trustworthy. Having digested all 72 pages of the 2023 Media Nations report, I’ve picked out my key findings and insights:   📺 TV & Video Viewing: TV broadcasters held their ground, thanks in part to growth in on-demand platforms.    💷 Commercial Broadcasters' Revenue: After a strong 2021, revenues fell slightly in a tough economic climate.   🎥 Production Schedules: Broadcasters returned to full production in 2022, though some pandemic impacts linger.   💡 SVoD Market: It's maturing, with subscriptions seemingly reaching a plateau. Providers are innovating to maintain revenue growth.   📻 Commercial Radio Growth: Fueled by local ads and sponsorships, with AM switch-offs and DAB shifts boosting access and savings.   🎧 Live Radio & Younger Audiences: Live radio reach stays strong with a shift to online, while music streaming and podcasts attract the youth.   https://lnkd.in/eGr9yDBW   #media #broadcasting #SVOD #radio #television

A terrific summary of last week's Northern Waves TV event in Oslo by CSI Magazine's Goran Nastic. Our own Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen (he/him) both served as moderator and presented a summary of Greening of Streaming's LESS Accord, while the rest of the day was a comprehensive overview of the opportunities and challenges presented by the growth of streaming and CTV in an era that's defined as much by cost-cutting as it is cord-cutting. One key takeaway (and a possible area for growth) is regional sports and news in countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Because of their relatively small size/population and high technology adoption rates—as well as the outsized role that TV journalists play in the political process—the Nordic region seems ripe for even more growth in streaming than we've already seen.

We uncover: 🚀 Broadcasters in a Pinch: Declining MVPD subscribers means shrinking retransmission consent fees for broadcasters. Add to this, network affiliates' ability to create deals on their behalf, which complicates revenue-sharing dynamics. 💼 Direct Negotiations: A recent push by broadcasters aims to give them more negotiating power. Despite the surge in “cord cutting,” you may be surprised to learn that younger generations are still watching local news. Our recent Local TV Report in collaboration with TVREV and Evan Shapīro found that 68% of respondents age 25-34 are streaming local news from various platforms. For councils who are in the process of chamber upgrades and considering technology to support transparency, here's some info about the implications of integrated video streaming.

𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐜��𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, on July 8 had issued a Tariff Order that, “A pay channel available at no subscription fee on the DTH platform of the public service broadcaster (DD FreeDish) has to be declared free-to-air by the broadcaster of the channel for all the addressable distribution platforms also to have a level playing field.” Over 15 pay channels, including news and entertainment, are available on DD Free Dish. The Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation and News Broadcasters and Digital Association, on behalf of the broadcasters, are likely to move to court challenging this directive. #broadcasting #digital #news #entertainment #trai #dth
