Let’s retire job descriptions saying, “We’re looking for a rockstar…” Unless you’re hiring for a rock band, no, you’re not. Rockstar is vague, it’s not descriptive, and it’s corny. Is that how you want talent to perceive your business? Your employer brand deserves job descriptions that actually attract the talent you want. Job descriptions that: - Clearly state responsibilities and rewards in your brand voice - Share what’s great and what’s challenging about the company - Are up front about compensation - Connect the work to the company’s business goals and brand strategy Does the talent you want, want to work for you? Does it really make sense to hire customer service rockstars? Here are some common rockstar attributes: ✅ Talented ❌ Selfish ❌ Demanding ❌ Immature ❌ Entitled ❌ Obnoxious ❌ Toxic Talent is great, but the rest of the list is a nightmare for any manager. Rockstar employees often have great numbers. That's what makes them rockstars. But they can crush your service culture. Coworkers get demotivated. Their performance suffers, and many quit. There's an even worse problem. I spent 10 years of my career helping companies prevent workplace harassment. Guess who was more likely to harass others? Rockstars. My family and I have had an earthquake kit for years...if not decades...waiting for the BIG ONE! I suggest we all do the same in regards to our current jobs. The BIG ONE being that ominous calendar invite from HR: "Update" 😱 I was laid off in May 2020...it frickin' sucked!! Big time!! I was sooooooo angry! 🤬 🤬🤬🤬🤬 And, so unprepared! I had just finished staffing up Activision's Call of Duty's first mobile team! 25 full-time hires in less than 6 months! I thought I was irreplaceable! Nope! Now it's a billion dollar IP!! Gosh I wish I had royalties...but I digress... What saved me? My LinkedIn network, of course! Within a few months of my layoff I launched my own company: Reign Recruiting. It's been four years now....and I love every minute of my life! (Remind me to send a thank-you note to my former manager 😇) Be. Prepared. Always!!! 1. Have your resume audited once a year; it only costs $30! 2. Keep your LinkedIn profile fresh and exciting!! Check out Zach Bingaman's profile!! (BTW, can someone please hire this human! This past week, I was able to take some time to do something that is crucial for our well-being but often difficult to make room for in the "always on" world that we live in--reflect. It wasn't under ideal circumstances--I, along with two of my incredibly talented customer success manager colleagues (Avia Bell King, MS, CCSM and Elle Freeman) were part of a round of layoffs at Chronus. While a layoff is never easy, I find myself feeling optimistic about the future and the unique opportunities that it will bring. I am extremely grateful for all that I learned about customer success in my nearly 2 years at Chronus as well as the many amazing colleagues and clients that I had the opportunity to work with and learn from. So many of you have reached out with kind words and offers of help. Thank you--this has truly meant the world to me. I know that my colleagues and I are entering a very tight job market in our field, and I'm asking for your help in providing referrals, connections, etc. I am interested in customer success manager, customer education, customer enablement, and onboarding positions. We're already a week into February and it's crazy to think we're already 10% of the way through 2024! ⌛️ Now my last post was to highlight how we're continuing to hire here at Sporty, and that has only been reinforced this week as we've been finalising our initial 2024 hiring roadmap 🗺 Only looking at my direct team we hired over 70 Tech & Product professionals last year, and this does not include the wider Talent team hiring from the wider company (and doesn't include our massive commercial hiring either!) I sadly became severely ill for the start of this year and have been playing catch-up across the last couple of weeks, and seeing the layoffs in the tech industry (once again) is devastating to see. With our hiring at Sporty however it would be great to hopefully find a home for those who have been impacted, or for those in the industry who feel like the need to make a move for any reason.
