I'm always AMAZED when ALLAN DIB defines marketing by saying : * If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying “Circus Coming to the Showground Saturday,” that’s advertising. * If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk it into town, that’s promotion. * If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed and the local newspaper writes a story about it, that’s publicity. And if you get the mayor to laugh about it, that’s public relations. * If the town’s citizens go to the circus, you show them the many entertainment booths, explain how much fun they’ll have spending money at the booths, answer their questions and ultimately, they spend a lot at the circus, that’s sales. I finally got to see this corker of an ad on a trip to London yesterday. It is definitely a risky campaign, but the increased exposure and buzz it has created is undeniable 👀 Creative campaigns that cut through the noise of everyday advertising are what excites me most about working in marketing! Whether positive or negative, the strong reaction I’ve seen from this ad means it has definitely done its job of sticking in people’s minds. 📚 Currently diving into the fantastic world of marketing with Allan Dib ‘s book, "The 1-Page Marketing Plan." 🎪🎈📖 This book has given me some awesome marketing insights, and I'm excited to share one of them! 🎯 You know, sometimes people confuse marketing with things like ads, branding, and other fancy terms. But they're not exactly the same thing. Let me break it down in a simple way: 🎪 Imagine the circus is coming to town, and you make a sign that says "Circus Coming to the Showground Saturday." That's like advertising. 🐘 Now, if you put that sign on an elephant's back and walk it around town, that's promotion. 🌼 If the elephant accidentally walks through the mayor's flower garden and the local newspaper writes about it, that's publicity. 😄 And if the mayor laughs about the whole thing, that's public relations. 💰 But the real magic happens when you show the townspeople all the cool stuff at the circus—explaining how much fun they'll have and why spending money at the booths is worth it.
