We're back with the 'Meet The Moosies' series, this time sitting down with Heath Saber, Inventor Relations Director at Moose 💡 Perfectly combining creative with commercial, Heath has a one-of-a-kind role at Moose. Heath works out of our Melbourne office, but his role in Inventor Relations sees him collaborating with creators and innovators all around the world 🌏 What would your parents say you do?  I think they get it now but like most people outside of work, it took a while to fully grasp it – it’s such a unicorn role, and very particular to the toy industry. I usually tell people, think ‘Shark Tank’ or ‘Dragons Den' but for toys... and I don’t quite have Mark Cuban’s wallet!    What do you really do? In reality, my job involves scouting for new and exciting toy concepts, evaluating their potential, and bringing them into the Moose Toys' portfolio. It's a mix of creativity, strategy, and negotiation – ensuring we stay at the forefront of innovation in the toy industry. To do that, I need to ensure no stone is left unturned in the hunt and ensure that Moose Toys is the #1 destination to partner and develop these concepts with. How long have you been at Moose and in what roles?  Just passed the 8-year mark! I started here in Product Management, working on some great brands but quickly moved into the space I’m in now - Inventor Relations. In that time, I’ve also been lucky to get involved in some of our other projects like spearheading our entry into games with Rob W. – which was great!   If you were a Moose toy, which one would you be and why?  I guess I relate most to Treasure X figures… always on the hunt for gold and adventure!    Biggest pinch me moment at Moose? I'd say my first New York Toy Fair in IR was a 'pinch me' moment - for the same reasons I consider my whole role here to be 'pinch me'. Of course, every role has its stressors, but I get to meet with and talk to interesting people, find amazing ideas, chair those through our process and then see them on shelf!   Why do you love working here?  I love working at Moose because of the innovative and dynamic environment. We're constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the toy/game industry, and it's incredibly rewarding to see the ideas come to life and bring joy to children worldwide. In addition, there is a great sense of community within our team of over 700 people and with so much humility, care and focus which makes it easy to be inspired!   What would your workmates not know about you?  My workmates might not know that I co-founded a photobook company called Koobi just over a decade ago. It was an exciting venture that combined my love for creativity with entrepreneurship. I was at Legoland earlier this week. We paid good money to spend 6.5 hours standing in queues for maybe 20 mins of ride time. But the kids loved it. Lego is a phenomenon. And the story behind it is equally impressive: ➡️ 1930s - LAUNCH - selling wooden toys ➡️ 1940s - PIVOT TO PLASTIC - shifts to plastic bricks, lacked appeal as they didn't stick together very well ➡️ 1950s - PRODUCT INNOVATION - added those little plastic tubes into the bottom of the bricks to hold them together ➡️ 1970s - PRODUCT DIVERSIFICATION - creates its first themed lego sets - Lego Space ➡️ 1990s - PRODUCT PARTNERSHIPS - first IP licencing deal - Star Wars ➡️ 2000s - OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES - loss-making and risk of bankruptcy forces a refocus on the core (sell off theme parks, reduce range of bricks) ➡️ 2010s - THE FLYWHEEL - added digital channels and interactive elements to build out the Lego ecosystem ➡️ 2020s - FINANCIAL GROWTH - now at $2bn profit on $9bn revenues So many takeaways for companies of all sizes: 💡 Consistent innovation is important no matter how simple your product appears to be (a plastic brick) 🔎 The risks of over-expansion and losing sight of the core 🤝 Leveraging partnerships and tapping into new communities 🚀 High growth is achievable even in incumbents that have been around nearly 100 years…just look at Lego’s recent revenue growth 👇

Rebecca and I have signed up to a really intensive programme to help us set the foundations for and drive our business Figurati Collective with purpose and clarity. We are almost halfway through and it's been quite a journey so far! Not only is it crystallising our thinking as business partners working together it's really challenging how we build a successful, sustainable business that's true to us, reflects our values and principles and fuels our passion. This week we've been looking at niching and what I've realised from this is how incredibly tough it is and how it really messes with your head. Niching is not being all things to all people, being a generalist, being so rounded you have no edge (as someone who I admire from my time at Heineken always used to say). But there's so much FOMO! It's really pushed us to look closely at what we do, where we can really make a difference, get known for our expertise and add maximum value for our services to those clients who want what we offer. Having pondered this and doubted ourselves that we might over-niche to the point that we end up with something that doesn't attract any clients, I needed a break and with poo bags in hand nursing a pounding headache, I took the dogs out for a walk and have a breather. That's when I spotted this 'car'... This 'car' (it's actually defined as a quadricycle, not a car - who knew that was a thing) has got to be the nichest of niche... The Citroën Ami. Tiny - only two seats, no luggage, it takes up 1/2 a standard parking space. It's fully electric with a whopping range of 46 miles and a top speed of 28mph. No radio, it comes in an extensive choice of 3 standard colours! Now either Citroën have let a group of pre-school kids loose in their labs and come up with a whacko idea or they've been really, really smart, brave and uncompromising in working out a really clear niche for their new product. I'd imagine the latter... For me, it's a salient reminder that there's no such thing as over-niching, just do it with confidence, conviction and don't ask the kids for their ideas unless your niche is servicing them as your target audience! #figuraticollective #niche #citroenami #marketing

The Toy Association announced the upcoming dates and locations for #ToyFair. The following addresses common questions about why decisions were made to shift the show's timing to the first quarter, why the location will change to New Orleans, and why there won't be a Toy Fair in 2024. See below for the answers: 1. Why is Toy Fair moving back to Q1 when it was just moved to fall? Before the pandemic, we heard repeatedly that changing manufacturing lead times and retailer buying patterns demanded a shift of the show's timing from February to an earlier fall timeline. We also conducted extensive research into what would be best for the toy community. Based on all these considerations, The Toy Association Board of Directors was responsive and Javits Center helpful to move the show to fall for 2023. Our Board, which is made up of representatives from toy companies and retailers of varying sizes, continues to listen to all stakeholders when making decisions about the future of Toy Fair. The show's key audiences have returned to traditional views that Toy Fair is most valuable as a North American trade event when it takes place in the first quarter of the year. In fact, we have heard that an earlier timeframe than in the past is most ideal -- so we plan to host the show in mid-January for 2026-2028. In 2025, we will host Toy Fair in early March at the Javits Center in New York City. We remain open to returning to New York for 2029 should space come available. 2. Why is Toy Fair moving to New Orleans? We needed to find a high-quality convention center that could host a show of Toy Fair's size and magnitude in the mid-January timeframe that our audiences requested. New Orleans is also much more affordable for our exhibitors and attendees. The city has state of the art facilities including a brand-new airport, public transportation, renowned restaurants, a wonderful cultural scene, and a strong collaborative partnership between the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans & Company, and the business community. All of these factors make it a perfect and welcoming fit for Toy Fair. We have a three-year commitment in New Orleans. Our Board of Directors and staff will continue to listen to our community to ensure Toy Fair remains a strong, vibrant, trade event that meets the needs of all attendees. 3. Why isn't there a show in 2024? Following the decision to move Toy Fair to Q1, it was simply impossible to host a show in a few short months from now. 4. What are the future Toy Fair dates? If mid-January was the preference, why March of 2025? Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York City, March 1-4, 2025.  Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, January 17-20, 2026; January 9-12, 2027; and January 15-18, 2028. The factors of available dates in desirable cities and sufficient space make it difficult to quickly move a trade show the size of Toy Fair. The March 2025 dates were the first and best available thanks to the Javits Center.
