EMEA Fitness Apparel @Nike ▪ Merchandising excellence through purpose, people, and process know-how ▪ I help others with insights about business ~ career ~ personal growth
One day in the job of a Product Merchandiser A critical part of personal growth comes from experiencing new things. I recently did a six-month "stretch" in Direct-to-Consumer Digital Merch at Jordan Brand, which was more uncomfortable than I expected... But the experience taught me a lot about their function and about myself. It also left me with a fresh perspective to take back into my full-time role. Stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new was the best thing I could have done to boost my learning. If your ‘something new’ happens to be merchandising — here is what my day as a Product Merchant looks like: 🕘 09:00 Planning meeting My experienced planning counterpart knows our business through and through. She advises on what sells and what doesn’t, while I share trends and product updates. We review how price impacts margins or how much product to put into the market. 🕙 10:00 Sample review Passion for product is in our DNA, and so we obsess over every detail. How does this zipper look, is that material nice, will this be comfortable to wear..? We get familiar with the products so that we can tell engaging stories about them to others later. 🕛 12:00 Manager/mentor lunch While I dedicate time to development on Fridays, I learn from others throughout the week. Time with my manager or a mentor is always well-spent, whether we talk about business strategy or personal goals, need to vent, or just chit-chat for a bit. 🕐 13:00 Account partner presentation We present our strategy and product line before we get ready for feedback. Partners leverage their commercial mindset to tell us what is working and where they have concerns. We manage to identify a few quick wins to improve the assortment. 🕒 15:00 Consumer insights session This is what our job is all about: serving consumers with beautiful, functional, and inspiring products. We don’t get to meet the end-user daily, so we could spend all day asking them questions, getting their experience, or showing new samples. 🕔 17:00 Global call Our Global partners are 9 hours behind on the US West Coast, so this time is critical to connect when they wake up. We share insights and influence the strategic direction of future product. We balance the needs of our consumer with those of the Global one. 💡 What does a day in your job look like? #Merchandising #CareerGrowth PS. Here I'm getting my makeup done ahead of a presentation - all part of the job. PPS. Did this make you think? Reach out to me! I am a product merchant in sports & fashion retail, an advocate for personal growth and an introvert figuring out how to thrive professionally. I'm happy to have a conversation, share my experiences and pass on the tools I've found to deal with different situations. I'm always looking to learn from like-minded people, so I'd love to hear back from you.
