Our rugby blog is up and today we compare the international youth tournament - U20 Rugby World Cup with the previous tournaments of the early 2000s - the IRB U19 and U21 tournaments. 🎬 This video went viral: Roger Federer giving a graduation ceremony speech at a US university.   🔔 Two key takeaways:   1️⃣ “Of the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won nearly 80% of them. What % of points do you think I won in those matches? Only 54%. Even the top-ranked players barely win more than half the points they play.” Federer explains how after losing a point, you must learn to move on quickly. It highlights that the line between winning & losing everything is often thin. Victory isn’t just about the best forehands or winning serves.   2️⃣ Soft Skills !  The rest of his speech subtly highlights how an incredible combination of soft skills propelled him forward: #resilience, #adaptability, discipline and hard work, #selfconfidence, frustration management, learning, and especially handling constructive feedback, which helped him both personally and professionally. If it’s true for him, it must be true for us.   #Tennis is an amazing sport because it’s a battle between two opponents, involving physical prowess, technique, tactics, and emotional management. It’s also one of the most frustrating sports, where players aren’t allowed to show their frustration. We all feel space by having a big group hug and taking 3 steps backward. The drop in energy is space. Space is the absence of things. Spatial awareness is using the things in the way - to frame the space. We time when to move through that space - generating options as we go.   This generates the question - what is it like to have poor spatial awareness and timing?   We see only things in our way. We seek ways to overcome the things in our way. We seek ways to move the things in our way - out of our way. Or we shrink our world - so the things in our way - no longer play a part. It never occurs to us that we can move through the space between things generating options as we go.   _________________________________ Rugby provides a useful way to explore spatial awareness and timing. There are two ways to play rugby. The first way is to create a team to overcome or move opponents out of the way. This requires a degree of athletic dominance. It needs players to focus on opposing players who are in the way. This is South Africa. The second way to play rugby relies on players phasing their movement through the space between opponents. Players must have spatial awareness and timing. This is Ireland and France. South Africa won the World Cup because an extended tournament allows players to perfect their ability to execute a plan to overcome and move opponents. Teams like South Africa improve as the tournament progressed.   Succeeding at playing the Ireland way - requires players to have a diversity of thought. This helps the players give each other a broader range of options. A long tournament like the World Cup can result in players thinking in a more similar way. This reduces the range of options players can provide each other in a game.   So a long tournament like the World Cup lifts the performance of teams like South Africa and can narrow the performance of teams like Ireland.   Hopefully, teams like Ireland and France will get better at maintaining their player's spatial awareness and timing during long tournaments.      See you on a court soon   Cheers, Jon
