Don't miss: Nursing Times September 2023 With the new academic year getting under way, our September edition is dedicated to supporting nurses in education and exploring the challenges the sector faces. The NHS workforce plan includes an ambitious pledge to increase the number of nursing training places by 80% by 2031-32. But the number of people in the UK applying for undergraduate nursing courses has dropped by 16% this year. We have spoken to nurse educators and employers faced with massively boosting nursing numbers at a time when interest in the profession seems to be declining. The new leaders of the Council of Deans of Health have also shared their thoughts exclusively with Nursing Times on the problems facing universities and how change is needed. Meanwhile, our clinical section looks at education from a career perspective, focusing on what it is like to transition from being a clinician to a lecturer, and explores placement opportunities in nursing homes. We also discuss the learning experiences of those who were students during the pandemic and hear from one graduate who hopes she will not be labelled as one of the ‘Covid generation’. #education #students #studentnurses #nurse #nurses #nursing #health #healthcare #university https://lnkd.in/evFvmiXH

The technological transformation of nursing education - how Elsevier supports the training of nurses. Critical to setting students up for career success as health professionals is the curriculum to prepare nurses for the licensure exam, the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). “When our faculty looked at our NCLEX-RN pass rates, they hovered between 86-92 percent. They identified it as a major gap in our program outcomes. Our graduate performance did not match the academic potential of our students,” says Dr Anna McDaniel, dean of the University of Florida’s College of Nursing. To increase the student NCLEX-RN pass rate, McDaniel and her team began working with Elsevier, an information and analytics provider which is part of RELX, to implement HESI, a review and testing solution that helps students stay on track with their test preparation. The University of Florida had already leveraged HESI in its legacy curriculum for mid-curricular and program exit assessments but saw its full adoption as the potential answer to their problem. The University of Florida College of Nursing improved its annual pass rate to 96 percent, representing a 4 to 10 percentage point increase year over year... #nursing #nursingeducation #nurses #elsevier #HESI #healthcare #health

🗞 Preparing Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) for Success 🗞 The 2023 passing rate since the NGN NCLEX-RN was implemented, for first-time IENs, was 52.60% (National Council of State Board of Nursing). Just like the passing rate increased for USA nursing graduates, it also improved for IENs. However, if the IENs were in a program with the same rigor and accrediting standards of nursing programs in the USA, this 52.6% would be considered too low, and the program would be closed. What is the difference? Most IENs do not register in preparation programs, nor they have a mentor or coach with nursing experience in their country of origin and the USA. Commonly, they pay to use a platform created for the US graduates, with little or no guidance. Thus the gap in practice between the professional practice of nursing in their country of origin, vs the professional practice of nursing in the USA is neglected. And we see the results. For a program to succeed, a IEN need a coach, someone with experience in both countries, or at least who can do an assessment, and close the knowledge/practice gap; who cares enough for the candidates to coach them, more like being a "school preceptor" to increase their chance of success. You live and learn. You apply and succeed! #IENsuccessInNCLEX-RN #ProfessionalNursingPractice #SchoolPreceptor #YouLiveAndLearn #YouApplyAndSucceed

Dedicated and Committed to Advancing Healthcare Excellence and Patient Care|| Transformative Medical Trainer: Elevating the Skills of Doctors and Nurses
"Florence Nightingale: The Trailblazer of Modern Nursing Who Emphasized Communication and Compassion" Florence Nightingale is best known as the founder of modern nursing. As a teenager, she would spend time helping the sick and poor in the village near her family estate and believed nursing was her calling. In 1844, she announced her decision to work as a nurse. She studied as a nursing student at the Kaiserwerth Deaconesses' Institute in the city of Düsseldorf. By 1860, she had used donations to establish the world’s first professional nursing school at St. Thomas' Hospital in London. Florence Nightingale emphasized the importance of various skills and qualities that are crucial in nursing, including those we now refer to as soft skills and communication skills. Although the specific terms "soft skills" and "communication skills" were not commonly used during her time, her writings and teachings highlighted the significance of these abilities. Here are a few key points from her work: 1. Empathy and Compassion : Nightingale believed that nurses should possess a deep sense of empathy and compassion for their patients. 2.Clear Communication: While she may not have used modern terminology, Nightingale understood the importance of clear communication. She advised nurses to provide patients with information in a way they could understand, ensuring that patients were well-informed about their care.
