Excellent blogpost by Daniel Sleat. It's been one of the greatest privileges of my life to have played a small part in his journey - and to have had his support through many of my own struggles over the years: you've inspired me to try and pen something as thoughtful for next year! The final paragraphs made me pause for thought. While I think meaning for many is very hard both to define and then to find, the broader point is spot on: as a society we are pushing far too many people beyond their physical and mental limits and deceiving them with promises of happiness through things that won’t bring it. We should have an honest debate about what life is, and should, really be about. It's not just about levels of unhappiness, it's also about productivity. Exhausting and deceiving people will not make them more productive: instead it has the opposite effect. We now live lives where we are 'always on' - a state which is just as damaging to society as the scale of bullying and harassment online. This isn't a 'work' problem, it's a social one - which makes it all the more difficult to solve. But as any of us who have struggled with mental health know: the first step is admitting you're unwell. As a society that's what we should do, and then take one step at a time to try and resolve it.
For this year's World Mental Health Day I've written a blog on my experiences with my mental health, what's helped me in looking after my mental health, as well as some thoughts on how I think we need to be honest and reframe the debate if we really want to tackle the issue. I'd love to know what you think! #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #worldmentalhealthday https://lnkd.in/eMv2KUCG
