Today, according to the ADA National Network, there are 54 million Americans living with a disability. July is Disability Pride Month, have you heard of it? This month was introduced to celebrate and amplify disability activists, elevate disabled voices, and rally against ableism in all areas of society. It also seeks to change the way we think about and define disability, promoting that it is a natural part of human diversity to be proud of. So let’s celebrate and amplify disabled voices! Let’s call out ableism where we see it in society. And let’s reassess our perceptions of disability. https://lnkd.in/dUbcXYVh

It's Disability Pride Month which serves to embrace diversity, challenge stigma & promote inclusivity by acknowledging the history, achievements, experiences & challenges of people living with disability. Despite progress, barriers & misconceptions persist, so July is a time to call to action the work that still needs to be done for a future where everyone can thrive without barriers. Disability encompasses a diverse range of conditions, experiences & individual needs, however stigma & a lack of understanding can sometimes lead to assumptions about someone's abilities without truly knowing them. Each person has a unique relationship with their disability, identity, experiences, ambitions, skills, needs, interests, challenges & the support they require to thrive. We want to honour the many people who have set the foundations for progress & those who continue to push for it by advocating & working towards an equitable future that truly celebrates the diverse identity & needs of all.
