Hey network, happy Thursday! Settle in, let me tell you a story. Storytelling in the workplace is so important and I'll try not to waffle too much, but please bear with me.   The best part of three years ago, I was in supermarkets, working a job that I liked, but had outgrown. It wasn't challenging me anymore and I was exploring what my next step looked like. Back then, it was to learn the role of the Store Support Manager and while I remained in my current role, I started picking up extra tasks, helping run the store and learning as much as I could.   Then one day, out of the blue, my Store Manager called me into the office. As is human nature for most of us, I worried about what I had done wrong and was a little bit terrified as I met her for a chat. My Regional Manager had heard about an opportunity for a 3-6 month secondment into our Talent Acquisition Team, supporting during the covid recruitment uplift and he thought I might like a crack. My Store Manager asked if I'd like to apply, I thought about it for about 2.7 seconds, then agreed to go for it.   A day or two later, I was speaking with the National Operations Recruitment Manager - I don't remember much of the conversation if I am to be honest, it was my first interview in years and I was pretty nervous! - but she was warm and welcoming and on my birthday nearly three years ago, I joined the TA Team at Coles.   I spent almost a year recruiting for Store Team Members, then another opportunity arose to support the Retail Leadership Team. Again, I threw my hat in the ring with the support and encouragement of my Team Leader, had a conversation with the Retail Leadership TA Manager and a couple of weeks later, I started my first stint in the RL Team.   I had my secondment extended a couple of times which I was thankful for, as I had really found my groove and could say, with my hand on my heart, that I loved my job. All the while, I was working to be the best recruiter I could possibly be, being guided by amazing TA Leads in the team, learning from my mistakes, asking lots of questions (some silly ones, I am sure!) and grinding day in, day out. I had one goal in mind and I was laser focussed - becoming a permanent member in the Retail Leadership Team.   Guess what? My dream has now come true and I could not be happier if I tried.   I saw a LinkedIn post some time ago with the, 'fake it til you make it' quote crossed out and replaced with, 'face it til you make it.' I faced it every single day and I have finally made it. I sort of feel like the little engine that could. So I guess this is a very long winded way of me saying to you - don't give up. Set your sights on that dream job and keep it in your focus. Some days it may seem a little burry or obstacles may get in the way, but do NOT give up. Keep after it, keep chipping away, keep learning, stay hungry, make mistakes, get back up but do not lose sight of that goal. You can do it.   ps thanks for listening to my Ted Talk 😉

Before Colonel Sanders founded KFC, he worked a number of jobs including as a railway labourer and gas station operator. Before he found fame in Hollywood, Harrison Ford was a carpenter. Before becoming the 40th President of the United States of America, Ronald Reagan was of course an actor. There are hundreds of examples of people who have successfully transitioned from one industry or role to another, often exchanging a mediocre career for fame, fortune and success as they leverage their previously tapped or untapped skills, experience, knowledge and interests. So why do companies make it so hard for people to do this? More often than not, the clients I support want to recruit someone currently working for a company in the same sector and of a parallel profile, who possesses a track record in a comparable role, who has previously managed budgets and a team of a similar size, and who is of the same cultural outlook. In other words, they want to appoint someone the same as the previous incumbent. But might someone of a slightly different profile be even better? Maybe a person’s transferable skills would lead to innovation and solutions the company has never tried before? Maybe someone from another sector would have already faced and solved challenges that are only now emerging in the hiring organisation’s one? Maybe someone from a smaller business would act with greater agility while someone from a larger firm would bring better processes? It’s an essential part of any recruitment process to challenge assumptions, ask questions and consider whether searching “outside the box” might be appropriate or even beneficial. This came across my feed recently and it got me thinking... in my 20+ year career (please don't do that math 😉), I can honestly say that I have never had a job that I hated. I hadn't really ever thought about it, but I have loved every role I've held. 💚 I loved the restaurant business, and could have done it forever if the schedule was conducive to raising a family. 💚I loved being a store manager at Starbucks. Building teams, creating great customer experiences, developing partners, driving business success through people... all of it gave me such a sense of belonging and purpose. 💚 I love being a recruiter with Starbucks Talent Acquisition. Supporting business leaders build great teams and ensuring a candidate experience that Starbucks can be proud of is something that I knew I wanted to do from the moment I hired my first partner and saw the excitement they had when they put on their Green Apron. How is it possible that I've hit the lottery with every job throughout my career? I think it may have to do with the goals I have set for myself along the way. I knew when I left the restaurant business, I needed to find a company whose mission and values resonated with me, while also allowing me to serve others, both as a leader and through customer connections. Then I found Starbucks... nailed it! During my operations career at Starbucks, I knew I wanted to get into Talent Acquisition, and didn't listen when others told me I couldn't, or I needed to take a different path to get there. I believed in myself, worked hard at my goals and found leaders who would listen and support me along my development journey. I hear a lot of recruiters say that they "fell into recruiting", not me.... I knew this is where I wanted to be! Now, 2+ years into my recruiting journey as Starbucks, I am learning a new function inside TA as a leadership recruiter, continuing to grow my career and make an impact along the way. The moral of the story here... don't listen to others when they tell you your goals aren't in reach. Believe in yourself, make a plan and find leaders, peers and mentors along the way that will help you get there. You too can say, I love what I do... and mean it! Today is my one week anniversary in my new role The Culture Club. And thank you to the team for making me feel so welcome! There's been leader forums, client meetings, pitch preparations and much hilarity (and yes, even pancakes!). It’s been a blast. Along with joining I've been reading Give and Get, a book all about the employee value proposition. The simple premise is when recruiting you should talk to adversity in the role as well as the benefits. In the US c.250 people are turned away from every job. Job adverts shouldn't be designed to sell your product to everyone, but to be clear about what it will take to thrive. Or as it says “we all want to know what it takes to become a Jedi in this job”. As part of my interview process I got to grill the team about what it's really like to work here. They were brutally honest, for which I’m thankful. I got to see how my values and aspirations compared to the role and environment - and making the switch from in-house to agency I was conscious this could be a big leap. Instead I've walked in with my eyes open and so far it's been everything I’d hoped for. My one wish, I hope every recruiter can be a bit bolder and talk to the good and the bad, so that candidates can make the right decision for them. Last night, as I lay in bed caught up in my usual routine of pondering everything but sleep, a phrase kept echoing in my mind: "The opportunity, for opportunity." In my six years in the staffing industry, I've seen countless perks, bonuses, and benefits packages designed to attract candidates to new roles. Yet, these offerings often miss the mark, failing to truly excite them (aside from the bonuses, of course). What really resonates with employees is the "Opportunity for opportunity." They crave the chance to learn, to be challenged, to unleash their creativity, to solve problems, and to broaden their knowledge and skills. So let's rethink our approach. Let's skip the routine pizza parties, the team-building ropes courses, and the weekly catered lunches. Instead, let’s create environments where employees can truly thrive and shine. The defining moment in my career happened in early 2004 💼 💼 I was working for John Lewis & Partners as a selling Department Manager, and the Managing Director of John Lewis Southampton asked me to step away from my selling role to join the HR team. 💼 Back then it was called Staff Office, these were very different times! 💼 I had been hoping to move to a particular selling department, in fact I was convinced that's why my MD wanted to talk to me. I think he knew, and on reflection I'm convinced he knew I might not be too keen on a role in Staff Office. 💼 I was professional and listened to his request, of course I said yes, these were the early days of my career and ultimately I was (and continue to be) driven by helping others achieve collective goals for the success of the team. I've always loved understanding my role in the big picture, and he knew how to paint that picture, engaging and motivating me to be my very best. ⭐ Little did I know this would be the most significant moment in my career, as over the weeks, months and years that followed I discovered my calling. ⭐ Indulging briefly in my memories of John Lewis, I worked with some of the most inspirational and hard working people, and I am fortunate to now call many of them friends. Claire Dunkason thank you for that first opportunity to be part of your team, I have zero regrets and am grateful for the huge learning opportunities that came with our time in Staff Office, and of course the fun. Today on International HR Day, I am celebrating; 🎉 the opportunity that presented itself to me 20 years ago 🎉 saying YES 🎉 the fabulous people I had the opportunity to work with and learn from at JL ⭐ You never know what is around the corner, and how one seemingly small decision can have such a powerful impact on you and those around you for days and years to come. ⭐ So, as I continue to shape my own future in HR with The Best Version I encourage you to be open and brave to the opportunities that are ahead of you, to trust your instincts and be true to the best version of you.
